Each department, including Civil Liberties and Human Rights (CLHR), is recognised for its fearless, dynamic, and high-quality litigation services.About the Civil Liberties and Human Rights Department:The CLHR Department is known for its wide-ranging legal work, including private law litigation, inquests, and public law matters such as prison law, counter-terrorism, and data rights.
Their practitioners have a long-standing record of handling complex, high-profile cases, representing individuals, activist networks, NGOs, and community groups.
With a strong referral base, including internal and external sources, we have secured ground-breaking results against major public bodies, including the police, the Home Office, and the Ministry of Justice.I am seeking a committed solicitor with a passion for Civil Liberties and Human Rights to join this CLHR Department.
The role involves managing your own caseload, assisting other fee earners, and contributing to the continued development of the department.Main Responsibilities: Managing cases from inception to conclusion, including taking client instructions, advising on case merits, and handling costs and funding applications (including the LAA's CCMS system).Liaising with all parties involved in a claim, including defendants, courts, and solicitors.Providing clear, high-quality legal advice to clients on civil litigation, public law, prison law, and more.Drafting pre-action correspondence, complaints, pleadings, and witness statements.Conducting detailed preparation for cases, including disclosure, instructing counsel and experts, and preparing for hearings.Maintaining accurate case records and correspondence in line with SRA standards and professional ethics.Complying with all applicable procedural rules (CPR, coronial law, etc.).
Person Specification:Essential: NQ solicitor or up to 3 years of relevant post-qualification experience in civil litigation, public law, or prison law.Demonstrable interest in Civil Liberties and Human Rights law.Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Human Rights Act 8, Data Protection Act 8, and Equality Act 0.Experience working on publicly funded cases, with proficiency in case management, drafting legal documents, and evidence review.Ability to handle sensitive client interactions and complex legal matters with tact and diplomacy.Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet tight deadlines.Competent IT skills, including MS Word, Excel, and case management systems.
Desirable: Established links with referral organisations.Experience in victims' rights, inquests, discrimination, or immigration detention cases.Interest in developing practice areas through writing, lecturing, or networking.
