Job Summary: The Vice President and General Counsel position provides leadership, guidance and advisory support while working on and overseeing all legal matters including those involving regulatory, labor and employment, litigation, compliance, risk management, and contractual issues.
Duties/Responsibilities: Advise the property General Manager and senior management on all legal matters.Responsible for effectively advising senior management as well as interfacing operationally concerning compliance with regulatory requirements.Serve as primary legal contact for the property human resources department and risk management.Provide information and advice relating to complex employment law, workers' compensation, general liability and the like.Oversee and maintain responsibility for the company's litigation portfolio and provide litigation support by drafting responses and position statements for all legal transactions and litigation including harassment, discrimination charges, ADA, leave administration, workers' compensation, unfair labor practices, etc.Negotiate and/or review commercial contracts, leases, and agreements with management concerning effectiveness and potential or actual problems.Review and suggest updates to company policies as a means of reducing risk to the company.Assist in the coordination of filings and other communications with certain regulatory agencies in Virginia.Select and manage outside counsel as needed, including review of invoices and authorization for payment.Advises and represents company in grievance, mediation, and arbitration processes.Assist or leads in all aspects of collective bargaining including drafting and negotiating collective bargaining agreements.Represent the company in legal matters.Ensures company is following applicable state and federal laws and remains up to date on new laws or changes in the law.Advises on strikes and work stoppages.Coordinate and prepare witnesses for arbitrations and agency investigations.Compose and prepare confidential correspondence, reports, and other complex documents.Conducts research and regulatory work related to collective bargaining, gaming and Virginia Lottery.Training and advising on union organizing campaigns, risk management, anti-harassment, anti-discrimination, etc.Assists with union petitions and elections.Ability to extend complementary services in accordance with the approved comp matrix.Performs all other duties as assigned.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Must be 21 years of age or older.Law Degree from ABA approved law school/Member of Virginia Bar.7-10 + years' experience in the area of general labor law, with an emphasis on drafting and negotiating bargaining agreements.Exposure and general understanding of the following areas: Litigation and Litigation Management; Regulatory; Risk Management, Labor and Employment, ADA and protected leaves.Certifications, Licenses, and/or Registrations: Ability to obtain and maintain license as required by jurisdiction(s).Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.Ability to lead a team as well as roll up your sleeves and work independently.A conceptual thinker with strong vision, judgment, and intellect with ability to work quickly on and prioritize a wide variety of projects.Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with team members at all levels of the organization.Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with quick deadlines and multiple demands constantly shifting needs of very busy operating subsidiaries.Must be able to work a flexible schedule, weekends, and holidays.Physical Requirements: Occasionally required to stand and walk.Able to interact with others while maintaining a positive and courteous demeanor.Ability to work in an environment with noise, smoke and flashing lights.
