Job overviewThis post has been created as a locum position (12 months in the first instance) to cover the Sabbatical period of one of the structural interventional Cardiologists. The post will therefore support the Structural Interventional Service, particularly the TAVI service which is currently expanding rapidly to meet huge clinical demand.
Main duties of the jobThe post-holder will be a fully trained and independent interventional Cardiologist with expertise in structural intervention, particularly TAVI.The successful candidate will be trained in coronary intervention and be an independent first operator. They will undertake primary PCI on the current PCI rota, if necessary with mentored on-call commitments for the first 6 months.The post holder will have experience in TAVI, and will receive training/mentoring to become an independent first operator.Training in mitral/tricuspid edge-to-edge repair techniques and other structural interventions will be provided depending on experience.This individual will perform outpatient clinics independently, run catheter lab coronary intervention lists, participate in the Consultant-of-the-week and on-call rota, and provide support to the service as required.The post will involve close working with the Clinical Nurse Specialists to prioritize investigation and treatment of patients.Working for our organisationKing's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust aims to be BOLD; Brilliant people, Outstanding care, Leaders in Research, Innovation and Education, Diversity, Equality and Inclusion at the heart of everything we do.
Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesTogether with the other interventional Consultants, provide a service for TAVI and coronary patients, including all aspects of interventional treatment.Shared responsibility with other Interventional Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Cardiology Unit on a rota basis.Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.Responsible for teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as required.Out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed.Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.Contribute to the Audit Programme.Take an active role in the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of the Division's Business Plan.Conduct activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Cardiology services.Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty.Work with clinical and professional colleagues to maintain productivity and enhance job satisfaction.Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional Manager/Clinical Director.Comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies.Implement the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in a manner consistent with evidence-based practice.Person specificationQualificationsAchieved GradeTraining and ExperienceManagement and LeadershipResearch and PublicationsPersonal SkillsTeachingRegistrationWide experience in all aspects of Cardiology and Intervention, culminating in award of CCT or equivalent.Specialist training in coronary intervention – independent coronary operator status.Significant exposure to and experience in TAVI.First operator TAVI ability.AdministrationExperience in day to day organisation of Cardiology services in a busy Teaching Hospital.Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.Management and LeadershipAble to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.Management course and/or qualification.AuditThorough understanding of principles of medical audit.
