Description :Human Sample Management Team Technician Reports to: Nicola O'Reilly, Standards and Quality Lead in the Human Biology FacilityThe Human Biology Facility is being developed to build the Crick's capability and capacity for human research.
The facility will mobilise and expand existing infrastructure, skills and expertise to enable Crick scientists to conduct their research in human samples, human tissue and model systems.
The Human Sample Management Team is part of the Human Biology Facility.The role of the Human Sample Management Team Technician is to be part of the team responsible for receiving human-derived samples, processing and logging the samples and carrying out assays.
Samples received include those from participants on clinical trials which contribute to important research such as the LEGACY study.
Depending on the study requirements, samples may be stored or prepared for serology assays, some of which are carried out by the team.
Any sera, whole bloods or plasma that are leftover, are archived and tracked by the team.This role will require some flexible working hours, including from time to time a late shift, expected to be 12 pm to 8 pm, as necessitated by sample reception and processing requirements.Key ResponsibilitiesTo carry out daily tasks relating to areas of the HSMT remit, based on the worklist devised by the Human Sample Management Team Supervisor.
These areas include; Serum Reception, PBMC plasma production, assays and support to Healthy Volunteer blood donation program.To receive, track, process, aliquot and assay samples depending on study and project requirementsBecome proficient in various Laboratory Information Management software systems required such as; FreezerPro, FlexyLIMS and Serology LIMSTo understand and follow SOPs and Risk Assessments and be competent in all areasTo become familiar and compliant with CL2 practices, HTA, GCP, Clinical Research Delivery and other regulatory requirements as neededTo support development of new methods and standardsEnsure work and safety standards are maintained at all timesMaintain a clean working environmentEnsure adequate supplies of stock requiredTo report any adverse issues as they ariseSupport the Healthy Volunteer blood donation program at the CrickKey Experiences and CompetenciesThe postholder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, open, and collegial, in addition to the following:EssentialEducated to A level or equivalent and possesses a minimum of 5 GCSEs (including Maths and/or Science)Ability to work within regulatory and policy frameworksAbility to understand and follow SOPs and Risk AssessmentsCan demonstrate contributing effectively to the work of a teamPossesses good time management and organisational skillsPossesses good observational and attention to detail skillsPossesses clear and effective communication skillsProven accurate record keeping skillsAbility and knowledge to build and maintain effective relationships with a range of internal and external colleagues.The role requires lifting racks in the cryostore to retrieve samples and lifting racks out of the ULT freezers for sample retrieval or defrostingExperience using Microsoft office software package, particularly Microsoft ExcelWillingness to undertake training as requiredDesirableA degree in biosciences or similar, or equivalent experienceAn interest in biomedical research and a willingness to develop knowledge and understanding of the research programs at the Crick; knowledge of the Crick, its objectives, policies, practices and aims.Previous experience of working in a laboratoryPrevious experience of working in a CL2 laboratoryFind out what benefits the Crick has to offer:For more information on our great pay and benefits package please click here: Equality, Diversity & Inclusion:We welcome applications from all backgrounds.
