Job Description Reporting into the Director of Financial Control, the Group Financial Accountant's role is to provide technical accounting expertise to the Group Finance Department (and others) and to contribute to restructuring projects (often led by the Tax Department or CoSec).
The nature of our business and transactions we undertake is such that often the accounting queries are not straightforward and may not necessarily be precisely answered in Accounting Manuals or Documents published on-line. It is therefore necessary to form your own judgements based on information available, and then (where critical) to test these with our Auditors and if necessary other accounting advisors.
Based in either our London or Nottingham office, you will be proactive, professional and highly effective in your daily approach, continuously using your initiative; working under pressure to tight deadlines is an essential part of this role therefore clear demonstration of this must be apparent in your experience.
As the role is technical in nature, you will need to remain technically up to date and enjoy dealing with complex issues. Accounting Providing ad hoc advice to the Group Financial Controller (and others) when complex or controversial accounting issues may arise. Preparation of Accounting Papers to explain the approach we are taking regarding key issues, and to explore alternatives where these are available Development of new accounting policies where these are required Review of documents to be provided to the auditors or Audit Committee Review of the Annual Group Accounts and Interim Announcements to ensure they are in accordance with accounting guidelines Review of Statutory Accounts of the principal trading companies (note for the year ended 31 December 2023 this was extended to review of all UK statutory accounts, due to the change in the team responsible for preparation of these) Research the impact of new accounting standards that might affect the Group, and to advise as to how these should be dealt with Contribute to major projects where implementation of a new accounting standard is required (eg IFRS 16) Provide accounting guidance and advice to Tax Department regarding accounting treatments that may be challenged by HMRC Restructuring Provide Accounting input into major restructuring projects – eg how individual steps are dealt with, availability of distributable reserves, alternative approaches etc Carry out (or review) modelling regarding restructuring projects, ensuring the proposals are feasible and are correctly accounted for. Also consider the possibilities for alternative solutions Obtain or prepare accounting and other information to provide the basis for restructuring plans Develop models and steps plans for restructuring projects Prepare journal entries for posting of restructuring transactions and liaising with Finance Department to ensure this is progressed satisfactorily Liaising with Group Treasury to ensure transactions are correctly recorded in the Group Intercompany Loan System Discussion with Tax Department to identify any potential transactions which may have a tax benefit or help reduce their workload (eg proposing dividends to eliminate large intercompany balances) Review of draft legal documents used to execute steps plans to ensure they achieve the correct accounting outcome CoSec Identification of companies that may potentially be struck-off or liquidated in the near future Carry out research on companies identified by CoSec where they consider there is a possibility of striking-off or liquidating the company Preparation of steps plans to achieve the above Review of legal documents Treasury Involvement in Group Hedging Project Review of intercompany balances to identify any foreign exchange risks and devising plans to reduce these.
Preparing journals for steps plans designed to reduce foreign exchange risks Other accounting matters of a technical nature as and when required.
