Create Solutions that will enable a better tomorrow To assist our project teams to enhance biodiversity into our engineering designs, we are looking for a Ecology and Biodiversity Lead to join us.
Working on sustainability and environmental issues, you'll liaise with project teams and customers to co-create, implement and monitor ecology and biodiversity aspects of our projects and assist in further developing our biodiversity strategy in the UK.
You'll also collaborate with COWI's biodiversity teams in the USA Denmark, Sweden and Norway to share experience.
Our projects include terrestrial infrastructure and energy projects and a variety of nearshore and offshore engineering opportunities, although expertise in all these environments is not essential.
Your key responsibilities will be: Working with COWI's engineers to identify from project inception how to devise biodiversity enhancing designs and maximise the environmental benefits.
Working across multidisciplinary teams, utilising scientific principles and practices as well as existing and innovative technology to develop technical solutions to complex problems.
Engaging client facing project teams and customers to promote positive biodiversity practice at a project and organisational level.
Working with colleagues internationally to further develop COWI's approach to the biodiversity and sustainability challenges across the company.
Coordinating biodiversity assessments and be competent at using the DEFRA/Natural England biodiversity metric.
Establishing reporting metrics to capture impact of environmental initiatives.
Using technical proficiency to author, coordinate and contribute to reports and assessments, as well as the preparation of EIAs / ESs, DCOs and planning applications.
Managing sub-contractors for ecological surveys in a wide variety of habitats across the UK.
Liaison with the Project Director, project partners, design team, client representatives and stakeholders.
Contributing to the consent consultation process.
Supporting pursuit of relevant business development opportunities, developing client relationships and input into bids and tenders, as required.

On top of that, you'll have: A relevant degree or equivalent qualification Membership of a relevant professional organisation (e.g.
CIEEM) Substantial project related ecological experience in large multi-disciplinary civil engineering projects (including some of tunnels, bridges, marine works, offshore wind) Experience in the development of project documentation such as biodiversity management plans, construction environmental management plans or protected species licences.
A flair for creating practical solutions, innovations and concepts to enhance the biodiversity of project green/blue areas, construction compounds, linear infrastructure, as well as structure and earthwork surfaces.
Working knowledge and hands on experience with coordination of terrestrial and marine biodiversity surveys and assessments Considerable experience in preparing biodiversity inputs to the EIA and planning process, the implementation of biodiversity net gain, underpinned by understanding of UK environmental and planning regulations Good communication and inter-personal skills to work collaboratively in a diverse multi-disciplinary team
