Job summary WWL Teaching Hospitals is looking to appoint a full time Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, to join our breast multidisciplinary team for 10 sessions per week.The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of Surgeons, Oncologists, Histopathologists, Radiologists, Advanced Radiographers, specialised nurses and mammographers, as part of the breast team at WWL.The appointee will work closely with breast consultants, advanced nurse practitioners and cancer nurse specialists to deliver high quality outpatient services.
There is a weekly MDT for screen-detected and symptomatic breast cancers, post-op results, metastatic patients and patients with a known breast cancer diagnosis undergoing additional imaging.
The weekly plenary MDM is supported by a clinical and a medical oncologist from the Christie Hospital.
Clinical commitments will include provision of new patient assessment clinics, results clinics (symptomatic, screening, post op), follow up clinics, MDT and theatre.
Main duties of the job The successful candidate will be expected to have experience of managing benign and malignant breast disease in both the symptomatic and screening settings.
Familiarity with, and competence in, all common breast surgical procedures, as well as oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery, is essential.
It is expected that administrative work will be completed to a high standard and in a timely fashion.
There is no on-call commitment with this post.The breast unit has a well-structured audit and clinical governance programme.
The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in local, regional, and national audits and to support the governance and quality improvement activities of the breast unit.The candidate will be expected to be aware of all trials in our unit, actively promoting research within the unit, recruitment in trials and taking up opportunities to act as Principle Investigator for new studies.All consultants within the team are expected to contribute to medical education, maintaining the reputation the Trust has for excellent training opportunities for medical students and junior doctors.
About us Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust is committed to designing and providing services that meet the needs of the local population of Wigan and Leigh and surrounding areas.The Breast Care Services offer a comprehensive service across four hospital sites, the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wrightington Hospital, Leigh Infirmary and the Thomas Linacre Centre in Wigan town centre.The Thomas Linacre Centre also hosts the Breast Screening Unit for Wigan and surrounding areas for both the Breast Symptomatic and Breast Screening Departments provide all aspects of the management of breast disease in line with, Improving Outcomes Guidance, NHS Cancer Plan (July 2000), Manchester Cancer Breast Pathway Board Guidelines and NICE guidelines.
Job description Job responsibilities Key results from the job holder The appointee will be based at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary but will be required to provide a comprehensive breast service to support the Trusts breast service workload wherever it is located.
The appointee will be responsible for: Providing specialist advice for patients for the prevention and diagnosis of illness referred to them.
Accepting personal responsibility for the total clinical care of patients referred to them.
Collaborating positively with colleagues to provide effective clinical leadership for all the staff in the service.
Contributing to and participating in the development of the service.
Developing a special interest and working closely with the appropriate team to manage waiting lists and reduce waiting times in line with the Trusts protocols and patient charter/service requirements.
The post will form part of Surgical Directorate of the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.
The postholder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
In particular, he/she must support the Clinical Director across the whole range of their managerial and administrative functions and share the responsibility for providing services within the resources allocated by the Trust.
All facilities within the Trust will be available to the post-holder.
Subject to the provisions of the terms and conditions of service, he/she is expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies on clinical matters, and to follow the Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions of the Trust.
Where employees of the Trust are managed, he/she will be expected to follow the local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures.
Communications and Key Working Relationships Clinical Governance There is a structured programme for development of clinical governance within the Trust.
There is a governance sub-committee, which is a sub-committee of the Trust Board chaired by the Medical Director.
Within each directorate the clinical director carries responsibility for the development of governance within the directorate.
This is delivered through a Service Improvement Team, incorporating leads for audit, clinical effectiveness, clinical risk, research and development and the clients experience.
The chair of clinical audit and effectiveness co-ordinates the production of an annual audit cycle from the directorates, emphasising multi-disciplinary teams and team working.
The Trust is committed to continuous quality improvement and would expect all staff to embrace the tenets of clinical governance.
Continuing Medical Education The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
Appraisal The Trust has the required arrangements in place to ensure that all surgeons have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports surgeons going through the revalidation process.
Responsibility for Finance To ensure efficient use of resources at all times.
Responsibility for Human Resources To participate in Induction Programmes as required To adhere to all Trust policies and procedure Responsibility for Health & Safety Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions.
This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions Person Specification Qualifications Essential Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within 6 months of completion of CCST.
FRCS(Gen) or equivalent Training / experience in oncoplastic breast surgery (Logbook) Desirable MD or equivalent higher postgraduate training.
Oncoplastic breast fellowship.
Teaching/Education Essential Experience in teaching / training undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff Desirable Teaching qualification / higher degree.
Audit/ Research/ Publications Essential Undertaken complete audit cycle.
Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice and appraise scientific literature critically.
Knowledge of clinical governance issues.
Desirable Published research in peer-reviewed journals.
Interest and awareness of research methodology Higher research degree.
Personal Qualities and Management Skills Essential Caring attitude to patients.
