7 days ago University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust The post involves working within the surgical department to provide clinical care for adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients, in conjunction with the ACHD physicians and congenital heart surgeons based at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
The post also includes a full commitment to the adult cardiopulmonary transplant and mechanical support service.
The job plan will be based on 10 PAs with the possibility to increase this to 12 by mutual agreement.
It includes fixed operating lists and a weekly out-patient clinic as well as departmental clinical and quality of care meetings.
The transplant component includes weekly meetings and involvement in the implantation rota.
Main duties of the job The appointed consultant will work within the department to provide clinical care for elective and emergency ACHD surgical patients.
The appointee must have sufficient ability and experience to manage and operate independently on these patients as well as working with and alongside other surgical specialists as required.
The appointee will work collaboratively with Birmingham Children's Hospital congenital cardiac surgeons and the ACHD multi-disciplinary team to provide inpatient and outpatient care for ACHD patients at QEHB.
The appointee will also be responsible for working within the adult transplantation group to strengthen and further develop transplantation for ACHD patients as well as the wider transplant population.
The appointee will have responsibility for patients under his/her care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure.
The appointee will share clinical responsibility with colleagues in running the clinical work of the department and take part in the joint on-call rota for transplantation and mechanical support.
The appointee will play a role in meeting the Department's contracted obligations for the provision of cardiac surgery services and in ensuring that the overall performance of the Unit meets the appropriate quality criteria.

Job responsibilities EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE Have completed training either through a recognised training programme or via an equivalent route as recognised by the GMC.
Fully competent in conventional cardiac surgery with a demonstrable record of clinical development and expertise and outcomes.
Minimum of 2 years subspecialty training in congenital cardiac surgery to include a minimum of 1 year in ACHD surgery and 6 months in paediatric congenital heart surgery.
A proven interest in cardiopulmonary transplantation and mechanical support.
Candidates must demonstrate that they are able to work within a multidisciplinary team.
SKILLS and ABILITY Ability to manage own time and work effectively, understanding the role and importance of management in the NHS.
Evidence of previous management and leadership tasks.
Demonstrable leadership skills appropriate to directing, leading and teaching medical, nursing and other professions allied to medicine.
Participation in and leading a multidisciplinary team.
Participation in Human Factors Training.
Demonstration of well-developed communication skills and situational awareness.
Commitment to and understanding of the principles of audit at local and national level.
Participation in audit/QIP projects.
An understanding of and commitment to research and evidence-based practice in all aspects of medical care.
Publications in peer-reviewed cardiothoracic journals.
Experience of and willingness to teach all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Completion of Training the Trainers course, or equivalent.
Teaching faculty on local and national teaching programmes.
Person Specification Qualifications Inclusion on Specialist Register for Cardiothoracic surgery, or eligible for inclusion on the Register within 6 months.
