University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust Applications are invited for innovative, dedicated colleagues to expand our dynamic group of 12 luminal consultant gastroenterologists at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
We are expanding with five new consultant posts available to support the service.
A particular interest in the following would be welcomed:
Upper Gastrointestinal disease (including therapeutic endoscopy) Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical responsibility includes outpatient and endoscopy lists as well as supporting inpatient care.
Successful candidates will join the GI bleed rota.
They will be encouraged and supported to further develop their own clinical and research skills, and will also be expected to be involved in Undergraduate and Postgraduate education and research, with extra PA allocations accordingly.
Main duties of the job The old Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) was established in 1933 and was replaced with a new 545 million hospital under the same name in 2010.
QEHB is one of the largest single-site hospitals in the United Kingdom and is part of one of the largest teaching trusts in England, University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).
The hospital provides a major tertiary service for the people of the West Midlands and beyond.
The local population included in the catchment area for QEHB is around 2,665,000.
Services provided at the hospital include acute, emergency, trauma, and cancer care.
QEHB is also home to the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe.
The hospital has around 1,300 patient beds including the largest single-floor critical care unit in the world.
QEHB is also the home of the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine which cares for injured servicemen and women from conflict zones, as well as training Army, Navy and Air Force medical staff.
The hospital is approximately 15 minutes walk from Harborne, a local high street with excellent schools and leisure facilities.
The hospital is located beside the university train station and also has regular buses to the city centre and other areas.

University Hospitals Birmingham is a Smoke-Free premises hospital.
Job responsibilities The post holders will be responsible, together with other members of the department for the provision of a high-quality secondary and/or tertiary gastroenterology service to complement the existing sub-specialisation within the department.
The final job plan would be agreed on appointment; however, the successful candidate would be expected to undertake a mix of general gastroenterology, endoscopy, GI Bleed on call and ward cover.
Development of a sub-speciality interest is encouraged; a particular interest in upper gastrointestinal disease (including therapeutic endoscopy), advanced endoscopy/bowel cancer screening, intestinal failure or inflammatory bowel disease would be welcomed.
Depending on the needs of the department, the job plan could have elements of flexible working or annualised sessions.
The opportunities for teaching are excellent with a regular throughput of medical students from the University of Birmingham (located adjacent to the hospital) and Aston Medical School, junior doctors and specialist registrars.
The post holder will be expected to participate in postgraduate and undergraduate medical teaching, to participate in the training and development of all members of the multidisciplinary team and to participate and supervise the training of Foundation Years (FY), Internal Medicine Trainees (IMT) & Specialist (ST) Trainees and nurse endoscopists.
Opportunities for research are extensive including leading edge international, national and regional studies in gastroenterology, intestinal failure/nutrition, IBD, hepatology and endoscopy.
There is a nationally funded NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Gastroenterology and Liver Disease based at UHB as well as an active Clinical Research Facility.
Current consultants have several university roles including research and academia.
Pursuit of a GI research interest will be strongly encouraged and supported, and the post holder will be expected to develop research/special interests within the resources available, as agreed with the Clinical Service Leads.
KEY SKILLS To contribute to the clinical delivery and development of a specialist service (e.g.
regional upper GI service (Barrett's, EoE) and/or Bowel cancer screening and/or Intestinal failure and/or IBD service) To manage an average of 2 endoscopy sessions per week.
To manage an average of 3 outpatient clinics per week.
To participate in a rota for the management of inpatient gastroenterology services.
To participate in the emergency GI Bleed rota.
To provide specialist advice to colleagues.
To work to directorate agreed management guidelines.
