About the Role The Company Lawyer will play a key role in managing and advising on legal matters, with a focus on JCT and NEC contracts.
This individual will support various departments, from operations to finance, in assessing legal risks, negotiating terms, and resolving disputes while ensuring robust protection of the company's interests.
Familiarity with working as a subcontractor to larger tier 1 construction and civil engineering companies is essential, as is a deep understanding of the unique challenges and contractual requirements in this capacity.
Key Responsibilities Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate JCT and NEC contracts, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and alignment with company objectives.
Risk Assessment: Provide proactive risk assessments for new and ongoing projects, identifying potential legal issues and advising on mitigation strategies.
Dispute Resolution: Manage disputes and claims, both pre-litigation and litigation, collaborating with external counsel where necessary to protect company interests.
Legal Compliance: Ensure the company adheres to legal standards, industry regulations, and internal policies.
Advisory Support: Work closely with project managers, engineers, finance, and HR teams to advise on a range of legal issues, including employment, subcontractor agreements, insurance, and property matters.
Documentation & Records: Maintain organised, accurate records of contracts and legal documents, facilitating timely access and review.
Training & Development: Provide guidance and training to staff on contract management best practices, key legal concepts, and risk awareness.
Skills & Experience Required Qualifications: Qualified solicitor with a specialisation in construction law.
Preferred Experience: Previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor is highly advantageous Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in a legal role within the construction industry, with proven expertise in JCT and NEC contracts.
Sector Knowledge: Familiarity with geotechnical and ground engineering work and experience as a subcontractor to tier 1 construction companies is preferred.
Analytical Skills: Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify and manage legal risks in complex contract structures.
Negotiation & Communication: Excellent negotiation skills with a clear, concise, and practical communication style.
Problem-Solving: Ability to handle challenging situations with sound judgement, balancing commercial objectives with legal considerations.
Project Management: Proactive, organised, and able to manage multiple cases effectively, ensuring deadlines and deliverables are met.
