Job summary We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Dentist to join our friendly team in Staffordshire.Our service is reaching out to people, many of whom have previously found it difficult to access dental care.
We are continuing to meet the challenge of extending NHS dental access and providing continuing dental care for vulnerable individuals.
This includes the provision of general anaesthetic and sedation services alongside dental public health roles.Working within our urgent care team, you will be part of a caring and committed group providing high quality dental care to local people with a range of dental needs.
A positive approach is essential as well as the ability to strike a rapport with people who may find dental services daunting.

The post holder will have the competencies for a Band A dentist which cover the following 5 domains:- Clinical Communication Management and Leadership Professionalism Teaching and Training NATURE OF THE SERVICEThe Community Dental Service provides dental care for identified client groups and specialises in the provision of dental treatment for patients with specific needs.
These specific needs may include patients with physical and mental disability or impairment, patients with complex medical needs, patients requiring anxiety management and/or treatment with conscious sedation, patients with urgent and immediate dental needs who are unable to access NHS dental care in the GDS.
Care is provided from a 11 community dental clinics across Staffordshire, The Community Dental Service team comprises around 100 staff including the following Clinical Director Dental Services Senior Dentists Dentists Dental Therapists and Hygienists Senior Dental Nurses Dental Nurses Service Managers Receptionists Admin support This post will include travelling and flexible team working across several clinics as necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES To provide high quality urgent dental care to identified patient groups without access to routine NHS dentistry.
To assess patients dental needs and provide dental care which is:- professionally competent in line with the agreed protocols and clinical guidelines recorded effectively using the Sensei patient information system Compliant with the requirements of clinical governance To manage patients in a way which meets their needs, in particular to:- advise them of their dental needs and the recommended treatment plan advise them of the costs of treatment in advance follow a treatment plan which meets their views on the amount of treatment which they wish to undertake deal with patients in a friendly and reassuring manner arrange for appropriate referral when necessary to establish consent for treatment from the patient and/or the person with parental responsibility To work as part of the Community Dental Service team in meeting the agreed targets for activity and patient income as commissioned by NHSE.
To participate in the Out of Hours and on-call rotas, providing appropriate treatment and advice and where necessary taking emergency action to ensure the welfare of patients.
To work as part of a flexible service team :- providing cover as necessary for colleagues at the same or other locations maintaining good working relationships with colleagues and other healthcare professionals providing advice and support to other colleagues when requested participating in service developments and improvements co-operating with the needs of others for accurate and timely information ensuring that clinical correspondence is kept up to date To maintain professional and personal competence by :- participating in clinical governance, clinical audit, peer review and clinical supervision undertaking agreed relevant study leave, thereby ensuring the requirement for continuing professional development participating in relevant dental forums reading relevant professional journals participating in appraisal, job planning and personal development planning as defined by the SPDCS contract.
ADDITIONAL GENERAL INFORMATION: The post holder must be fully registered with GDC The appointment will be subject to the Trusts pre-employment checks as outlined in the Trust Pre Employment Checks Policy and the successful candidate will be subject to the Trusts policies and procedures.
The post is governed by Salaried Primary Dental Care Services Terms and Conditions of Service The post holder will be expected to cover colleagues during periods of leave or short term sickness absence The post holder has responsibility to abide by the safety practices and codes authorised by the Trust.
There is an equal responsibility with management to maintain safe working practices for the health, safety and wellbeing of oneself and others The post holder will ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act and its amendments The post holder will act in such a way that at all times safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults.
Familiarisation with and adherence to Trust Safeguarding policies is an essential requirement of all employees as is participation in related mandatory/statutory training The post holder will work in accordance with the Trusts policy to eliminate unlawful discrimination and promote diversity in the workplace and to positively promote at all times equality of opportunity in service delivery and employment for patients and staff in accordance with the Trusts policies, to ensure that no person receives less favourable treatment than another on the grounds of any personalised characteristic The post holder is expected to maintain an up to date awareness of the infection control precautions relevant to their area of work and implement these in practice.
As a minimum, this must include hand hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment, the use and disposal of sharps and communicating the importance to patients, prison staff and other health care staff you are working with.
Details of the precaution and sources of advice and support to assess and manage infection control risks are provided through mandatory training which all staff must attend at intervals defined in the Trust policy on mandatory training and can be found in the Trusts infection control policies and national guidance such as that published by NICE The appointee will be required to take up the post no longer than three months from the date of the offer of employment, unless a special agreement has been made between the appointee and the Trust.
