Job summary BSMHFT Teaching Academy are looking to recruit 5 doctors into a 1-year Clinical Teaching Fellow post.
Posts are suited to enthusiastic doctors committed to psychiatry who currently hold a training post within the UK.
We are looking for doctors who are passionate about teaching and who are keen to pursue a year out from training to further develop skills in teaching and delivery of medical education.
This post is particularly suited to doctors who have completed foundation training or who have completed core training in psychiatry within the UK and have obtained MRCPsych.
It is essential that the applicant has completed a minimum of 2 years working as a doctor in the NHS.
The post is ideally suited to a trainee who has completed psychiatry core training CT3 .
MRCPsych is desirable, although not essential, and applicants would be expected to have a strong foundation in psychiatry core principles.
The term of the post runs from August 2025 - July 2026.
Main duties of the job The post is full-time education delivery with no clinical or on-call commitment, although there is opportunity to undertake locum on-calls within the Trust and to undertake clinical sessions in order to maintain clinical skills.
The post holder will deliver teaching mainly in small group tutorials, although there is opportunity to take part in large group teaching.
The teaching is interactive and includes simulation training, communication skills workshops and facilitating theatre and film club.
The post holder will undertake a post graduate certificate/diploma or similar in medical education.
In addition, they will receive training in writing assessments, assessment feedback, developing simulation and other new and innovative ways of teaching which are available and supported by the Teaching Academy and the wider Trust.

Interviews will be held in person at The Barberry, National Centre for Mental Health, 25 Vincent Drive, Edgbaston, B15 2FG on Wednesday 19th March and Wednesday 26th March Applicants will be expected to teach the panel on a topic/skill of choice in 5 minutes.
This does not have to be a medical subject and creativity is welcomed About us The CTF team have their own office space based at the Barberry, National Centre for Mental Health, close to the QE-UHB Hospital and Birmingham Medical School and are supported by dedicated admin and an UGME manager.

Person Specification Scoring Essential MBBS / MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
Completion of Foundation Training programme or equivalent.
Completion of a minimum of 2 years working as a doctor in the NHS prior to taking up the post.
Engagement in medical education at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
Experience in delivery of small group teaching bedside teaching of medical students or tutorials.
Able to demonstrate good clinical skills and knowledge in psychiatry with a bio-psycho-social perspective.
Able to evaluate and report on teaching methods.
Able to demonstrate adequate skills in written / spoken English to enable effective communication with colleagues, students and patient educators.
Able to use essential IT software such as MS Word and MS Teams as well as email and internet for communication.
Able to show commitment to Trust values of compassionate, inclusive and committed.
Able to work cooperatively as part of a team, delegate appropriately and see tasks through to completion.
Evidence of reflection on / participation in continued professional development activities.
Excellent organisational and communication skills.
Able to travel across the community base area.
Desirable Postgraduate qualification MRCPsych, PGCert, Masters, PhD.
PGCert or PGDip in medical education.
In good standing with GMC.
No restrictions or conditions on practice.
Completion of a minimum of 3 years postgraduate experience in psychiatry ( completion of core psychiatry training programme) Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
Participated in research or evaluation of educational methods.
Development of teaching materials.
Involved in the assessment of medical students.
Knowledge of simulation training methods.
Delivery of lectures to large group audiences or using online platforms.
Interest in qualitative and quantitative evaluation of teaching methods.
Publications related to undergraduate medical education.
Interest or knowledge of using virtual teaching methods.
Knowledge and understanding of the NHS Healthcare Leadership Model and able to show some proficient behaviours.
Able to manage and prioritise tasks and cope under pressure.
Experience of working with service users / carers and patient experts by experience.
