Job summary An opportunity for a Clinical Fellow (Junior Specialist Doctor) within the Urology Department has arisen for a period of 6-12 months depending on training needs.
The post will provide a great opportunity to receive further specialist experience in Urology.
Main duties of the job This post will be required to cross cover both the Malignant and Benign services to ensure the service needs of both are maintained.
Within this the post holder will have at least 6 clinical sessions which will include, theatre, diagnosistics, Out Patients, MDTs and ward rounds.
The post holder is expected to be flexible with interchanging clinical sessions.
An example job plan is included in Appendix 2.The hospital participates in a busy emergency on-call service, which accepts a full range of urological emergencies.The Clinical Fellow will be part of the SpR rota, with full prospective cover for annual leave, study leave and bank holidays.
There are currently separate rotas for vascular emergencies, hepato-biliary and General Surgery at SpR level.
The SpRs elective clinical activity is cancelled when they are on call.There is a Surgical Assessment Unit which admits all surgical and urological emergency admissions.The Trust is a Major Trauma Centre as well as the Regional Burns Centre and is also The Centre for Defence Medicine, which is fully integrated within the Trust.
Military personnel work within all departments and the Trust regularly accepts service personnel with both acute and elective conditions.

Job description Job responsibilities The Urology Department team comprises 1 Associate Professor, 3 Honorary Senior Lecturers and 25 Consultants and 2 Associate Specialists.
Special interests within the department include the management of patients requiring partial nephroctomy, retroperitoneal node dissection, renal tumours invading the cava, robotic radical prostectomy and cystectomy and neobladders.
Around 170 laparoscopic kidney operations, 200 robotic prostate operations and 60 cystectomy procedures are performed each year and the unit performs the full range of general urological operations.
The unit also provides support for gynaecological colleagues at the Birmingham Women's Hospital, who undertake major abdominal and pelvic surgery.
The DaVinci robotoc surgery programme is well established for prostate surgery, the partial robotic partial nephrectomy service is beginning in September 2022 and the robotic cystectomy programme is planned to begin in 2023.In addition to a weekly MDT meeting there is a 'tracker' meeting which ensures all patients under the care of the MDT and currently receiving treatment are reviewed by the team each week.The urology service is supported by 7 clinical nurse specialists, and the unit comprises a single ward.
The unit works as an integrated and flexible unit, cross covering operating days, Ward Rounds and clinics, MDTs, emergencies and holidays.
There are close working relationships between all surgical specialties as all surgical wards are in close proximity to each other.
Joint consultant operating between specialties is common practice within the hospital.Day case surgery lists take place within the Ambulatory Care Department of the New Hospital.
Most endoscopy, some clinics and all elective in-patient operating takes place on the QEH site.
Person Specification Qualifications Essential *Medical Degree from a recognised University *Full GMC registration Experience Essential *A minimum of 2 years full time post graduate training (its equivalent gained on a part time basis) or equivalent experience and competencies.
