Position Summary Information Primary Purpose: Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (VPAA) provides critical consultation and leadership for key academic functions including promotion and tenure, academic grievances, and shared governance. The VPAA facilitates faculty support for student-centric pedagogy and practices. Through an integrated approach to the recruitment, development, and retention of faculty, the VPAA enhances opportunities for faculty professional development, supports diversity and inclusion, and maintains strong working relationships across the university, in support of faculty governance, and as designated, on behalf of the faculty. The VPAA is the essential conduit between the Office of the Provost and the faculty navigating complex issues with sensitivity and equity.
Essential Functions Serves as a core member of the provost's administrative leadership team. Upon request, serves as provost designee for critical appearance/speaking engagements and/or meetings. Responds to faculty with general or specific concerns that arise from shared governance structures and other mechanisms, through frequent communication, relationship building, and the development of solutions as needed. Supports faculty success through collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning, Academic Technology, and the Faculty Governance Office to implement new faculty orientation, mentoring initiatives, leadership development, and other faculty development initiatives. Serves as subject matter expert on key student success initiatives including faculty advising as related to the duties, tools, and professional development of faculty advisors. Acts as liaison to the University Promotions and Tenure Committee and facilitates the faculty tenure and promotions process by ensuring compliance with established policies. Adjudicates academic integrity appeals and coordinates with faculty and student life colleagues toward resolution. Provides faculty consultation and as needed works with faculty to resolve conflicts and issues whenever possible. Collaborates across provost leadership team for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of faculty and program data in support of academic affairs priorities. Provides managerial oversight for the senior academic project manager support of the faculty governance office in collaboration with the academic council chair. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Full-time faculty at University of the Pacific Earned doctorate (or terminal degree) from an accredited institution. Minimum ten (10) years of teaching experience at the college/university level. Minimum five (5) years of successful upper-level administrative or leadership experience at a university. Preferred Qualifications Preference will be given to those who have earned tenure and the rank of Full Professor. Excellent ability to plan, organize, manage, and coordinate multiple projects, budgets, and teams with varied and often competing deadlines. Strong written communication skills for reports, publications, speeches, and correspondence. Ability to research, prepare, and deliver responses to escalated constituent inquiries or issues. Effective professional interpersonal skills across a range of university constituents. Positive attitude, consistently proactive in carrying out responsibilities, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations, and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion. Strong analytical and interpretive skills; ability to adapt to using emerging technologies. Deep knowledge of faculty governance, curricular and academic administrative processes, and workflows. Familiarity with higher education assessment, evaluation, and accreditation. Strong collaborative and strategic planning skills; impeccable follow-through and attention to detail. Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting. Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work. Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range Hiring Range: $151,703.30 - $212,402.63 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
