Job summary Two exciting new roles have been created as part of the Smokefree Generation ambitions.
The Board at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust signed the NHS Smokefree Pledge in September 2024 and as part of this commitment, working with Suffolk County Council Public Health and Communities team, we need two additional tobacco dependence advisers to join the existing tobacco dependence team.We want to expand the service to support people to stop smoking whilst visiting our emergency department and site, with continued support in the community after their visit.In addition, a service will be developed to support staff to stop smoking at work and remain smokefree.This programme of work aims to prevent health complications and address the health inequalities caused because of smoking by offering treatment and support to people who smoke as well as reducing the harms of second-hand smoke on our hospital site.You will join the tobacco dependence team within the Trusts public health team, reporting to the tobacco dependence lead.
Main duties of the job You will have the opportunity to work confidently across the trust.
You will provide direct support to patients and/or staff who smoke, advising them of the options available to stop smoking and remain smokefree.
You will work closely with hospital teams to further build their knowledge, skills, and confidence in supporting people to stop smoking long-term by identifying people who smoke and treating tobacco dependence.There will be a requirement to build strong relationships with partner agencies.
Effective communication skills will be required, working with a range of stakeholders including patient and public representatives.
In supporting delivery of the 'Smokefree Generation', you will need to complete the required training with the National Centre for Smoking Cessation Training (NCSCT), Personalised Care Institute, and other trust training offers as appropriate.

Job description Job responsibilities Key Tasks & Responsibilities: Work closely with the tobacco dependence lead and tobacco dependence team, to support implementation of the 'Smokefree Generation' programme of work.Participate in the creation of the public health teams annual business plan and service objectives.Support delivery of specific objectives in the tobacco dependence and smokefree generation programme.Establish effective relationships with relevant stakeholders alongside the tobacco dependence lead.Participate in and provide support for teaching and training, research and evaluation activities as appropriate.Be a supportive agent for change, recognising the culture and goals of different teams and settings.Through accurate record keeping ensure the trust can demonstrate excellence in the implementation of the 'Smokefree Generation' programme across care pathways, aligned with national guidance on the role of NHS providers in prevention and population health, including guidance published by NICE, the Care Quality Commission and NHS England/Improvement.
Person Specification Education and qualifications Essential GCSE 4-9 (A-C) in maths and English or equivalent Health related level 3 achievement or willingness to undertake health related qualification(s) Desirable Health related professional qualification or registration NCSCT Core Knowledge and Practice Skills Experience and knowledge Essential Experience applying a wide range of IT skills and demonstrable recent experience of word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and email.
Experience supporting transformation programmes and projects Experience of working well with colleagues and patients/clients/users Desirable Previous experience working in a health, social care or public health setting Experience working with people in a clinical environment Knowledge of quality improvement methods Knowledge and understanding of delivering personalised care, shared decision making and supported self-management Knowledge and understanding of tobacco dependence, treatment and behavioural support, including the NHS Long Term Plan tobacco dependence and smokefree generation programme Skills and abilities Essential Advanced Microsoft Office skills Good communication skills both verbal and written to individuals and groups Ability to assist in data collection and analysis Good organisation skills Ability to develop strong relationships and effective partnership working Good interpersonal skills and able to deal with sensitive issues Willingness to assist in the development of policy and procedure Understand the importance of patient confidentiality Supportive and encouraging approach to offering advice and support Ability to travel to rural locations to carry out post Desirable Presentation skills Ability to use electronic patient records Personal qualities Essential Flexible approach to working hours and duties Works effectively as part of a team and independently Willingness to learn new skills Commitment to maintaining continuing professional development Self-motivated and proactive Commitment to the principles of preventing ill health, delivering outstanding care and improving quality
