Job summary The Surgical Assessment Unit is a fast-growing service at Bedford hospital.
It is an acute unit that provides rapid assessment and treatment for surgical patients.
SAU receives patient referrals from GPs, ED and UTC.
Patients attend the Unit for follow ups as well.

The urgent and emergency care directorate is in the process of developing a robust standard operating policy which will underpin the Same Day Emergency Care unit operation policy.
All patients attending the unit will be assessed utilizing pathways to ensure patient safety, effectiveness and efficiency.
Main duties of the job Bedford Hospital opened its' Surgical Assessment Unit in 2023.
We are looking for high motivated, dynamic hard working nurses from across a number of specialities.You will work alongside a friendly, supportive, and professional integrated team comprising of consultants, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapist, discharge co-ordinators, advanced clinical practitioners, pharmacists, social services and community services.The Unit is open seven days a week and provides 24 hrs service.

Assist with admitting, discharging, transferring and escorting patients and clients.Maintain personal and organizational standards of health, safety and security, following the uniform policy.Assisting in running clinics and supporting in admitting patients where required.
Person Specification Qualifications Essential Current NMC registration Evidence of professional development Basic life support up to date Desirable Mspp (willing to undertake) Venepuncture and Cannulation Male and female Cauterisation ILS OR ALS Knowledge Essential Demonstrates sound knowledge of infection control standards Aware of national nursing agendas Excellent communication skills both verbal and written To work well within the multidisciplinary team Understand the requirement to safeguard adults and children Flexible internal rotation to different areas to the department and trust if required Experience Essential Knowledge of patient conditions from different specialities Knowledge appraisal process Evidence of good clinical skills Demonstrates understanding of the importance of audit/quality
