Job summary Applications are invited for the full-time post of Specialty Doctor in Haematology at The Great Western NHS Foundation Trust.
The Great Western Hospital is a modern purpose built hospital.
The Trust provides acute services to Swindon and the surrounding areas (catchment approx.
400,000).
The Haematology Department is part of the Thames Valley Cancer Network.
There are 7 haematology consultants, two speciality doctors, one clinical fellow and three haematology specialist trainees (ST3-7), A dedicated 10 bed haematology ward is supported by two GPVTS trainee (ST1-4).
The department provides BCSH level 2B care (leukaemia induction, lymphoma salvage and primary CNS lymphoma chemotherapy) and is JACIE accredited for its autologous stem cell transplant programme.
There are shared outpatient and day ward facilities.
The department is well supported by two advanced clinical practitioners who are able to provide registrar level of care in support of our middle grade doctors.
There are also four clinical nurse specialists in haematology as well as anticoagulant and transfusion practitioners.
There are both local and Network wide multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
The Network meetings are hosted by Oxford University Hospital who also act as our referral centre for allogeneic bone marrow transplants.
There is an ISO accredited automated combined blood sciences and transfusion laboratory.
Main duties of the job The Duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.
The Haematology speciality doctors will work with the haematology training grade staff to cover the day ward, bone marrow lists and inpatient work, support outpatient clinics and attend MDTs.
This may include: The provision of medical support to the day therapy centre (chemotherapy day ward) Haematology Outpatient clinics Review of acute haematology admissions (supporting the acute haematology/oncology service) Cover for the inpatient ward Clinical trials involvement Participation in MDT meetings Laboratory work Regular bone marrow lists Provision of clinical support to haematology clinical nurse specialists Cover for leave for the haematology speciality training grade staff Week-end sessional (Sat and Sun am and bank holidays) ward cover for Clinical Haematology patients attending the day ward and on Dove ward, and outlying wards Audit and Clinical Governance.
The post holder must be aware of clinical governance and clinical risk management and take an active part in their implementation.

There is an active medical student teaching programme, allowing applicants an opportunity to develop formal teaching skills.
Job description Job responsibilities The post holder will work with the haematology training grade staff to support the haematology service, working in rotation between slots to cover haematology inpatients, liaison haematology and new referrals, outpatient clinics and the haematology laboratory.
