NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles.
We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.
The shift pattern for this position is 24/7 covering including 12 hour shifts.
The successful applicant would join a friendly team of Biomedical Scientists and support staff and would be responsible for the day to day processing and validation of results from patient samples: blood, urine, faeces, tissue biopsies, CSF and other body fluids in specialist and routine laboratory sections in Biochemistry using a range of scientific measurements and technical procedures.
The department has a number of highly specialized areas including the Scottish Trace Element and Micronutrient Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (STEMDRL).
You will provide advice to clinicians and other healthcare staff as to appropriateness of tests and time-scales.
You will be responsible for your own work and use specialist training to operate complex equipment and solve problems.
State registration with the HCPC is mandatory for this post along with a BSc Honour's degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, which is acceptable for HCPC registration.
It is desirable that you have formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline specific procedures and evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation and learning through reflective practice.
It is essential that you can evidence your continuing professional development and you should have: effective written organizational verbal and effective keyboard/IT skills.
This is a permanent post with full-time hours (37 hours per week); these hours will be worked over a 24/7 shift pattern after completion of a suitable training period.

Candidates without a specialist portfolio may be considered for appointment under AFC Annex 21 terms and conditions and will start on a percentage of the Band 6 scale depending on experience.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.
This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.
This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.
However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
