Sociology

Sociology is a subject that requires you to develop a critical view of the society around you, questioning assumptions taken for granted and applying theoretical analysis to back up arguments. You will look at how factors such as social class, ethnicity, and gender impact experiences of family life and the sociological explanations of why some groups achieve more in education than others. We critically look at crime and the way in which some groups within society are over-represented in crime statistics, alongside the role of punishment and crime prevention. In addition, you will also look at beliefs in society and the role that religion and beliefs take, analyzing the extent to which religion still plays a part in contemporary society.

You will attend the 'Behind Bars' conference and have the opportunity to visit one of His Majesty's Prisons. A trip to Belfast is also planned.
