Job Purpose The job holder works with customers both within the NDA group and the wider UK nuclear sector supporting continuing waste management and decommissioning mission of the UK to manage legacy waste, as well as supporting developers and requesting parties for new nuclear build.
The job holder further supports this aim by delivering scope relating to inventory management, auditing and assurance of the implementation of waste management practices, and other business critical tasks in support of the wider Technical Directorate.
As a Senior Waste Specialist, the job holder will direct and ensure the quality of work delivered by Waste Specialists, based on developed experience, as well delivering technical capability independently.
They will have responsibility for a number of assessments and/or other technical tasks, providing technical leadership and direction of Waste Specialists, with overall accountability for technical quality, application of NWS processes and procedures and output delivery.
It is essential that you have waste management experience covering a broad range of waste considerations.
You will be covering 5/6 projects at any one time and the ability to manage a variety of tasks will be essential.
You will be required to oversee disposability assessments, review technical reports, and supervise the work of more junior waste consultants.
You will have a degree within a science or engineering subject or relevant demonstrable experience.

Responsibilities Direction of Waste Specialists, and review and challenge in the delivery of assessments of packaging proposals for geological disposal and of the NWS Waste Acceptance Procedure (WAP) for LLWR Site disposal, ensuring quality and consistency with existing knowledge bases and requirements.
Primary intervention with customers on the production of waste packages to align with NWS standards and specifications, and the geological disposal concept, at all stages of the waste lifecycle.
Primary intervention with customers and supply chain on the production of waste packages for disposal at the LLWR site to inform regulatory decisions and demonstrate Permit or Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) compliance, at all stages of the waste lifecycle.
Management of inventory information, including maintenance of formal reporting, checking of information, and maintenance and operation of inventory tools.
Instigation, development and maintenance of positive relationships with customers across the UK nuclear estate, including regulator engagement, including explicit representation of NWS positions.
Production and assurance of quality records for waste management activities, including waste package records and inventory information.
Effective communication of identified requirements relating to waste management within NWS, and ownership of the resolution of issues.
Ensuring the application of required controls on waste package product quality and associated records through audit of relevant management systems and technical conformance, including application of internal process.
Supervisory line management responsibility for assigned Waste Specialists, including co-ordination of workload, training, development and maintenance of competence and performance management.
