Job Introduction The Digital Audio News department has a reputation for innovation and experimentation – creating formats aimed at attracting new audiences and promoting our best journalism across BBC platforms.
The team curates and produces content for the Latest News Playlist which features prominently on the BBC Sounds homepage.
The playlist includes short-form audio news articles, explainers, podcasts and highlights from BBC News output that help our audiences understand the top stories of the day.
Digital Audio News produces the 5 Minutes On, 5 Questions On and Reporter Reads podcasts for Sounds.
The team is also responsible for the day-to-day running of the Live News stream – a dedicated audio feed carrying the best of the BBC's rolling news coverage, and live podcast episodes.
Digital Audio News - part of the Radio & Audio Newsroom - works closely with editorial, curation and product teams in Sounds.
We are looking to recruit Senior Journalists and Journalists to help build this strategically important work for the BBC.
Main Responsibilities Digital Audio News is looking for creative Senior Journalists who can write, read, produce and edit audio news content to the highest standard, providing the listener with a rich listening experience.
We are looking for Senior Journalists with excellent editorial abilities, strong production skills, and an understanding of on-demand curation, particularly how to use real-time data to inform editorial-decision making.
The role involves on-air work, so candidates should have a strong and engaging voice.
Our team uses artwork and text to encourage audiences to listen to our content.
You should have a thorough knowledge of what's happening in the UK and around the world and a good sense of the stories that can appeal to those who aren't heavy news consumers.
We want people brimming with story ideas and treatments.
Our SJs work closely with correspondents, reporters and presenters, helping them to structure and re-work their linear radio and tv reports so they complement our conversational, informal style of storytelling.
They will be across the latest audio news trends and technology, and possess the ideas and flexibility to help us evolve the work of the team in line with audience demands.
An appetite for experimentation is a must.
The role may involve planning and delivering one off projects and piloting new ideas.
Some experience of leading small teams would be beneficial.
The team is small, so the SJ needs to be a self-starter and be as happy working alone as being part of a bigger team.
They may be required to act up to more senior roles on occasion.
You will be expected to work a full range of shifts – early and late – across a seven day week.
This is a newsroom-based role, with no working from home.
