This role involves creating innovative control algorithms, ensuring system stability, efficiency, and safety.
The Control Systems Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate advanced control solutions, fostering the continuous improvement of the fuel system's performance and reliability.
Key to this role is the development of fault detection and diagnostic algorithms, enabling prognostic responses to potential issues and ensuring the overall health and reliability of the system.Within this context, the purpose of the Control Systems Engineer is to: Develop and Implement Advanced Control Strategies: Design and implement innovative control algorithms for the Liquid Hydrogen Fuel System, focusing on stability, efficiency, and safety, initially to successful ground demonstration at TRL 6 in 2027.Fault Detection and Health Management: Develop sophisticated fault detection and diagnostic algorithms, enabling proactive responses to potential issues.
Implement health management strategies for continuous monitoring, predictive maintenance, and fault tolerance, ensuring system reliability.Collaborative Optimisation: Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, refine control strategies based on real-world data, conduct comprehensive testing, and integrate fault-tolerant solutions.
Contribute to the advancement of the fuel system's performance and reliability through continuous improvement initiatives.Responsibilities in this role include:Under the supervision of the Hydrogen Fuel System Technical Lead, this role encompasses the following responsibilities for achieving success:Implementation and Compliance:Implement and ensure compliance with Lifecycle Management and Engineering processes within Marshall hydrogen industrial research context.Support continuous improvement initiatives related to the hydrogen fuel system.Develop, design, and implement advanced control algorithms for a Liquid Hydrogen Fuel System, focusing on stability, efficiency, and safety.Investigate and evaluate emerging control technologies, ensuring the fuel system benefits from the latest advancements in the field.Develop sophisticated fault detection algorithms to identify anomalies and deviations from expected system behaviour.Design diagnostic algorithms capable of pinpointing the root cause of faults, enabling precise troubleshooting and efficient maintenance procedures.Implement real-time monitoring systems to assess the fuel system's performance and detect potential faults at an early stage.Develop fault-tolerant system designs, ensuring the system can continue operating with minimal disruption even in the presence of faults.Enable health management strategies that allow for proactive responses to identified issues, preventing potential failures, and ensuring uninterrupted system reliability.Integrate health management systems within the control architecture to enable continuous monitoring of system components.Develop predictive maintenance algorithms, allowing for the timely replacement of components before they fail, ensuring system longevity and minimising downtime.Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, simulation engineers, and software developers, to refine control strategies based on real-world performance data and operational requirements.Conduct thorough analysis of control feedback and collaborate with stakeholders to implement improvements and optimize system behaviour.Plan and conduct comprehensive testing procedures to validate the fault detection, diagnostic, and health management algorithms under various operating conditions and fault scenarios.Verify the effectiveness of health management strategies through simulation, modelling, and physical testing, ensuring alignment with performance goals and safety requirements.Ensure that fuel management and control system design, manufacturing, and maintenance processes adhere to relevant aerospace industry regulations and safety standards.Identify gaps in existing standards and collaborate with regulatory bodies and industry partners to develop new standards where necessary, ensuring compliance with evolving industry requirements.Collaborate with the project team and support functions to monitor project progress, track milestones, and address any deviations from the project plan.Proactively identify potential challenges and deviations, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure timely and successful project completion.Facilitate knowledge retention and dissemination strategies.Capture, organize, and preserve knowledge, insights, and best practices related to the hydrogen fuel system.Perform effective risk management activities to identify potential risks, opportunities, or vulnerabilities in the fuel system's design or operation.Develop strategies to mitigate identified risks.Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency, performance, and reliability of the fuel system architecture.Roadmap the remaining Technology Readiness Levels (TRL6-TRL9) for the fuel system.Apply if you have most of the following:Proficiency in fault detection and diagnostic algorithm development, emphasizing precision and efficiency in identifying system anomalies.Strong programming skills in languages for real-time control applications, diagnostic algorithms, and system health management.
Including or equivalent to IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management tools [DOORS NEXT, Workflow and Test management and Rhapsody], MATLAB, Simulink and Simscape, Siemens Capital software and ANSYS, COMSOLFamiliarity with sensors, actuators, and feedback control mechanisms used in industrial applications, as well as fault-tolerant system design principles.Strong project and risk management skills.Experience in manufacturing of mock-ups and prototypes.Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.ExperienceProven experience in control systems engineering, with a focus on developing fault detection and diagnostic algorithms, health management strategies, and fault-tolerant system designs for complex systems.Proven expertise in utilizing control system software and tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or similar platforms for algorithm development and simulation.Experience in real-time control implementations and integration with fault-tolerant systems.Experience in control system design for liquid hydrogen handling highly desired.Experience in relevant technology development [TRL3-6] project environments highly desiredApplied experience in developing new supply chains desirable.EducationDegree level or equivalent in a STEM or adjacent disciplineThe benefits we will offer you include:27 days holiday increasing with service up to 30 days (option to buy /sell)Pension contributions up to 9%Private medical insuranceExtensive flexible benefit program including Cycle to WorkLife assurance at 4x basic salaryEnhanced parental leave and payPaid volunteering leaveAccess to industry leading wellbeing resources and tools#LI-DS1#LI-HybridIND01
