Location: Any of our main Hubs (London, Salford, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff) with some travel to London.
THE ROLEWe're recruiting for a Senior Economist, to join our Public Policy team. It's a role with real impact and the opportunity to influence senior level decision making across a range of topics relevant to the BBC. This role is offered on a permanent basis and requires someone with a depth of professional economist experience.
The Public Policy team is the guardian of the BBC's understanding of its regulatory and public policy environment. It manages the BBC's relationship with key external stakeholders and leads the development of public policy positions. The Economics team provides analytical and economic expertise to support projects across three broad areas: i) regulation and competition; ii) public policy; and iii) conducting research which helps to deepen the BBC's understanding of the economic and social value it provides.
Main ResponsibilitiesReporting to the BBC's Chief Economist, you will be expected to apply your creativity and expertise to both develop and deliver high quality analysis, taking a lead on projects across a wide range of areas, including:
As part of regulatory processes, undertake market impact analysis and public value assessments, applying competition economics skills and theories to real-world changes to BBC services (for example, analysing the public value and market impact of the BBC's plans to launch four new radio stations);Key public policy questions facing the BBC, including as part of the upcoming Charter Review process by DCMS;Furthering the BBC's understanding of the public value it delivers to audiences, the economy and wider society (for example, our recent reports on the BBC's economic impact on Birmingham and Northern Ireland);This may include conducting in-house research and analysis as well as managing consultancy projects which lead to published reports and outputs.
Alongside the rest of the team you will help to shape our workplan, bringing your own insight and ideas to bear.
The role has a high level of exposure to senior colleagues working across the whole of the BBC. For many of the projects you will be expected to collaborate closely with other divisions of the BBC including Legal, Audiences, Content, R&D and the wider Corporate Affairs division.
You will have the opportunity to cultivate external relationships, including with the academic community to support our work and enhance our understanding of the media and creative sector.
Are you the right candidate?The successful applicant will have the following attributes:
Experience as a professional economist, gained within either a competition/regulatory authority, government department undertaking policy formulation, a consulting environment, academia, or in industry. This will be supported by a qualification in economics.Evidence of quantitative skills including Excel based modelling, econometrics or other technical skills.Experience of Industrial Organisation, Competition Economics, Behavioural Economics or Economic Appraisal and evaluation.Experience of stakeholder management and advising senior management.An effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills with an ability to confidently present complex data and arguments both spoken and in written form.A collaborator that is able to bring people together and work in multidisciplinary teams.Proactive and able to work autonomously to design and drive projects forwards.Knowledge and understanding of the media sector is advantageous but not necessary.
Proficiency with Excel is required, knowledge of either R or Python is desirable but not essential.

Job title In-house title is Senior Policy Advisor
Location: Office base can be any of the main Hubs with regular travel to London. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.
Salary: anticipated range £60,000 - £70,000pa (plus London Weighting £5,319pa if London based), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
