Job summary The primary purpose of the role is to provide chair side clinical supervision for dental students treating patients in the Carlisle Dental Education Centre.PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES (Educational)When required, the Clinical Supervisor will provide lectures, seminars and tutorials in line with areas of their expertise during the four-year period of the course of study and to participate in the educational assessment processes.The Clinical Supervisor will participate in peer review and other quality and continuing educational and professional developmental activities.To participate in the dental student admissions process including face to face interviews.To work collaboratively and co-operatively with the University, the Dental Education Centres in the Medical & Dental Collaborative and other NHS and partner institutions.To undertake other relevant duties commensurate with the level of the post as required.
Main duties of the job The clinical supervisor will be expected to participate in the assessment of student performance related to clinical activity undertaken in the Centre.
They will work collaboratively with the full time Senor Clinical Teachers and the dental staff of the Specialist & Special Care Dental Service to enhance clinical teaching .
The Clinical Supervisor will be required to screen patients and also to provide a limited amount of emergency access care.

Responsibilities concomitant with the Senior Dental Officer gradeThe undertaking of oral and dental examination and diagnosis as an essential component to the assessment of patients presenting at Dental outlets to both child and adult patients.Undertake dental treatment planning and patient management in order to deliver appropriate care for a range of patients for whom the Partnership Dental Service has a responsibility.
This will include the delivery of care at Dental Centres.Undertake routine dental care and exodontia on patients.Plan, develop, implement and evaluate appropriate interventions to prevent disease and promote health for individual patients.Identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and lead the dental team in the appropriate first line management of such emergency, using appropriate techniques, equipment and drugs.Use appropriate local anaesthetic and patient management approaches to control pain and anxiety during dental treatment.Undertake appropriate assessment and investigations of patients to determine the need for specialist advice including the need for advice in the management of the developing dentition.Undertakes the diagnosis, selection of appropriate restorative techniques and delivery of restoration or replacement of teeth in an effective way.Communicate with a range of patients and their families on individual clinical issues and communicate with all members of the clinical team and peers in an appropriate way and also with other health and social care professionals involved in the care of patients.Participate in the Dental Departments Clinical Governance activity including Critical Incident Meetings and Clinical Audit.
Engagement in the process to ensure the outcomes described by the Care Quality Commission, Essential standards of quality and safety are met.Take responsibility for the management of the immediate clinical environment and immediate dental team and to participate in Clinical and Managerial Supervision as required by the Partnership Trust.Understand the legislative framework governing the delivery of oral health care in England.Understand and put into practice the leadership of the immediate dental team.Understand the responsibility for health and safety issues.Demonstrate the application of the principles of ethical behaviour relevant to dentistry including honesty, confidentiality, integrity and compliance with the standards for dental professionals laid down by the GDC.Participate in the training of individuals on a local clinical basis.To maintain accurate clinical and statistical records through the use of the SOEL Health dental management program and other systems that may be used.
