Senior Clinical Fellow - General Surgery

Job summary Applications are invited for the position of Senior Clinical Fellow, in General Surgery, which is part of the Surgical Business Unit within Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.This post offers the opportunity to gain further experience and training in a variety of sub-specialties including Upper GI, Colorectal and Breast surgery.
This post is available from February 2025 to August 2025 however, a period of extension up to August 2026 may be available.The successful candidate will be part of a consultant led team providing care to patients on both acute and elective wards, as well as opportunity to work in out-patient clinic, endoscopy and theatre.
On-call duties are included within this role.There is a significant teaching component to this role and the successful candidates will be expected to participate in all teaching opportunities and in particular the organisation and delivery of undergraduate teaching programmes and will be supported for appropriate formal study leave.
Support towards postgraduate clinical teaching qualifications is available.
Clinical research and audit facilities are available and strongly encouraged.Although the post is not educationally approved as a recognised training post ie ST, a full training programme is provided along with additional learning opportunities and Consultant supervision.
Main duties of the job This post, although not recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons for Basic Surgical Training, will be suitable for candidates awaiting Higher Surgical Training posts or those seeking further higher surgical training.
The department has an excellent record of supporting SCFs going on to gain ST posts.There is a significant commitment to undergraduate teaching especially during the Hospital Based Practice and Foundations of Clinical Practice course for the medical students.
The successful candidates will be expected to plan, organise, deliver and support a range of teaching activities.
There will be support available for appropriate formal study leave and for studying towards higher teaching and educational qualifications.
Enrolment on regional higher educational teaching courses is encouraged.
Clinical audit and research facilities are available and are strongly encouraged.The Clinical Fellows will work a non residential on call shift system.
Each Clinical Fellow will work alongside their Consultant in their designated teams, attending outpatients, theatre and endoscopy sessions.
They will also be expected to attend multidisciplinary team meetings.
The department has an excellent reputation with a proven track record for research and published clinical audit.
The post holder is expected to be active within the clinical research areas and audit.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential GMC Registration MBBS or equivalent.
FRCS/MRCS part 1 or equivalent Desirable Progress towards Higher Medical Qualification.
MRCS part 2 Experience Essential Relevant and experience in breast & gastrointestinal surgery special interest pertinent to the post Evidence of clinical audit A major interest and expertise in general surgery Desirable Teaching
