Job summary Gate 36 Urology Outpatients, Diagnostics and Lithotripsy are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Registered Nurse to join our dynamic team!We are part of the largest division in North Bristol NHS Trust, ASCR.We are a small team of nurses, assistant practitioners and HCSW's and integrate well with the larger multidisciplinary team and the Bristol urological institute.
The department pride itself in providing evidence based patient centered care.As part of the nursing team you will have the opportunity to expand your urological knowledge and work with/support nurse practitioners, radiographers, clinical scientists and the medical team.
The department also provide a number of nurse led clinics for both cancer and non cancer patients locally and as a tertiary referral center.We provide urology services at the main Southmead Hospital site and at our Weston Super Mare hospital site.We are looking for a nurse with recent urology or surgical experience.
Main duties of the job After a period of training and supervision you will be expected to: Assist with flexible cystoscopies including dilatation, catheter change and laser procedures.Obtain Specimens and Undertake Point of Care testingAnswer phone calls and provide advice re health needs or appointments.Book appointments and print clinic lists and appointment letters.To carry out Bladder instillations, urinary 'flows' clinic, TWOC (trial without catheter), and CIC(clean intermittent catheterisation).Manage lithotripsy clinic alongside radiographers and asses patients prior to lithotripsy.Assist practitioners with LATP clinics(prostate biopsy).To carry out catheter change clinic including urethral, ileal conduit and suprapubic changes.Prepare and support patients prior to, during and following healthcare procedures.Confident to work independently and as part of the team.Carry out manual handling including using a hoist.

Job description Job responsibilities For a full overview of the role and the knowledge/ skills required, please refer to the Job Description document attached as an additional document to this advert Organise and participate in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing careTake regular responsibility to carry out required planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies.To report to the appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team any significant changes in a patients condition or situation or clinic outcome.Responsible for taking charge of the department occasionally in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility.Take personal responsibility as a team leader for the delivery of care of patients in the department or designated clinic.To contribute towards health promotion for all patients by providing education, support and advice, as necessary Ensure referral to appropriate professionals or agencies asTelephone assessment and providing advice and support to patients, carers, relatives and other health professionals and refer as appropriateEnsure the safe ordering, administration, and custody of patients medication according to Trust policies and procedures.In the absence of senior staff be responsible for delegation and supervision of appropriate work to other qualified staff, assistant practitioners, health care assistants and studentsWhere relevant to be responsible for co-ordinating outpatient discharge planning in partnership with the multidisciplinary team eg.
Catheter discharge.Where relevant, responsible for the admission, assessment and preparation of patients undergoing treatment or investigations.Escort patients to other wards or departments as required.To take personal responsibility for ensuring that patients are treated with courtesy at all times, the individual needs of patients are respected and confidentiality is maintained at all times.Liaise effectively with other disciplines or departments as appropriate.To be able to act in emergency situations and to be familiar with emergency procedures including fire and resuscitation.
To be responsible for the support and direction of junior staff in such situations according to Trust policy.To be responsible for ensuring provision of a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.Ensure the readiness for use of special equipment and the availability of nursing supplies in conjunction with the senior ward nurses.Ensure the safe custody of patients valuables and property according to Trust Policies (in emergency situations only).Report to nurse in charge/line manager all complaints, incidents or accidents involving self, staff, patients, visitors and complete relevant documentation according to Trust procedure.Be responsible for reporting and documenting any broken or damaged equipment according to Trust policy.To have detailed knowledge of Manual handling regulations particularly with regards to the moving and handling of patients.
To be responsible for ensuring that assessment of patients manual handling needs are carried out and ensure junior staff and students follow these requirements in the course of care delivery.Ensure safe storage and disposal of substances hazardous to health in accordance with Trust policy.
Ensure availability of facilities for disposal of sharps, toxic/cytotoxic waste in accordance with trust policy.In support of sister assist with monitoring of stock and report to ensure adequate levels are maintained and that the correct quantities are in supply.Monitor the use of supplies by junior staff to promote efficient use of all supplies.To be aware of the directorate bleep holding function.To have an awareness of the requirements for staffing the ward or department.
Occasionally take charge of the department.Undertake aspects of ward administration as agreed by the sister.Report reliably any episodes of sickness for self or that are reported to you to theRegistered nurse in charge to enable skill mix to be maintained.
Person Specification Education/Training/Qualifications Essential RGN with current NMC registration Evidence of continuing professional development Desirable Teaching and assessing qualification (Teaching and assessing in practice or equivalent) or willing to undertake Male and suprapubic catheterisation Work Experience Essential Completion of extended roles- male and SPC catheterisation, cannulation, venepuncture, intravenous medication At least 12 months of recent, post qualification experience in either an acute hospital or outpatient setting Desirable Experience in Urology or Surgery Experience of working as a Registered Nurse in the NHS Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Essential Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, to include report writing and record keeping.
Excellent interpersonal skills with patients and the multidisciplinary team Ability to work as part of a team Computer / IT skills and expectation to develop these in line with the needs of the service Care flow Electronic patient record, ICE, Microsoft teams, Outlook- Email, symbiotics and connecting care Time management/Basic Problem solving skills Ability to organise own workload.
