Job ScopeThe Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.

The Public Engagement Manager will support the Head of Public Engagement with operational management and oversight of the public engagement team's core work packages and programmes.
This will include line management of two Senior Public Engagement Officers, who work across events and researcher development.
The Public Engagement Manager will provide secretariat support for the Society's Public Engagement Committee and will be responsible for developing and coordinating the Society's History of Science public engagement programme.
The post holder will be subject to Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.
ResponsibilitiesThe work of the Public Engagement Manager will include:
Operational oversight of key public engagement programmes, including the annual Summer Science Exhibition.Budget management and reporting.Line management of Senior Public Engagement Officers.Development and coordination of the Society's History of Science public engagement programme.Acting as secretariat for the Society's Public Engagement Committee.Representing the Society at external public engagement-related events and meetings.Maintaining positive working relationships with key internal teams and external partner organisations.Supporting the Head of Public Engagement with reporting on progress against the Society's public engagement strategy.Key Knowledge and Skills RequiredKnowledge and qualifications Educated to degree standard or equivalent experience (Essential)Knowledge of public engagement best practice (Essential)Understanding of the importance of connecting science and society (Essential)Knowledge of how to evaluate public engagement activities (Desirable)Experience Experience managing or coordinating high-profile events (Essential)Experience of successful project management (Essential)Experience coordinating or delivering training for researchers (Essential)Experience supporting researchers to deliver high-quality public engagement projects (Essential)Experience of line-management (Essential)Circumstances Ability to work flexibly, including some evening and weekend work (Essential)CompetenciesSelf-management: Identifies difficult situations, controls pressurised situations, effectively enthuses those in the team.Working with others: Resolves conflicts, seeks out new networks, uses discretion when negotiating.Resource management: Manages complex projects to time, budget, and specification.Critical thinking: Evaluates ideas, makes sound decisions in a complex environment.Adaptability: Actively seeks new challenges and incorporates others' ideas.Managing people and relationships: Sets expectations and encourages participation in discussions.
