Job title: Programme Leader in Engineering School/Function: School of Higher Education Responsible to: Dean of School / Head of Programmes Responsible for: Delivering the programme using appropriate teaching and learning and assessment methods.
Salary: up to 55k per annum subject to skills and experience Overall purpose The Programme Leader role is a key postholder in our academic management structure.
The role involves the academic and line management responsibilities for a specific programme and associate staff.
There will be a limited number of teaching hours associated to the role, but responsibility will be for ensuring the programme meets the associated learning, teaching and assessment requirements and an excellent academic experience for the students.
The role will be hybrid with associated duties both on-campus and online.
Specific duties and responsibilities The key responsibilities of a programme leader are to: Manage the day-to-day delivery of the programme.
Ensure a positive academic student experience.
Monitor, review and enhance the teaching learning and assessment of a programme Manage and ensure all assessments and marking are delivered appropriately and to the required standard.
Work with both internal and external stakeholders to support the management of the programme.
Academic Management The post holder will Provide line management for named Lecturers and Associate Lecturers as allocated by the Head of School (or deputy).
Ensure that each new Lecturer/Associate Lecturer under your line management receives a full academic and staff induction in line with college policies and procedures.
Provide communication, guidance, and support to all staff for which you are allocated line management responsibility.
Liaise with other Programme Leaders and Senior Lecturers as appropriate to ensure that staff under your management receive appropriate operational guidance and communication when teaching on programmes that are not your immediate responsibility.
Ensure that each member of staff line managed by you maintains a personal development plan and receives an annual performance appraisal in accordance with college policies.
Identify staffing needs and work with relevant colleagues to allocate staff to timetables to ensure all modules are appropriately resourced across the programme.
Engage in recruitment/marketing activities in relation to the programme.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment The post holder will Ensure that all aspects of the programme comply with the Academic Regulations for the Taught Programmes.
Ensure that relevant Programme Handbook, programme and module specifications are current and maintained and staff briefed appropriately.
Ensure that the programme learning outcomes are fit for purpose and that module learning outcomes are aligned to them.
Ensure that programme and module changes are appropriately considered at School level and is carried out in line with the Colleges or university partners' Programme Design, Approval and Amendment Procedure.
Ensure the programme VLE is maintained and current.
Liaise with administrative staff to ensure the programmes are appropriately administered.
Liaise with administrative staff over the scheduling of meetings of the board of study/programme team, the staff-student committee, and the module/programme board of examiners Ensure that all relevant information is available for the consideration of module and programme boards of examiners.
Attend module and programme boards of examiners where the modules/programme are considered.
Ensure the related policies and procedures of the College and/or partner University are implemented in the delivery of the programme.
Lead board of study/programme team meetings and report on key programme issues to relevant colleagues.
Liaise with the secretary in the production of appropriate papers (agendas, minutes, etc) for meetings of the programme team/board of study, staff-student voice committee.
Student support The post holder will Facilitate student registration on the programme in conjunction with appropriate administrative staff (at regular start points and for late-registering students).
Co-ordinate and participate in the student induction process, liaising where appropriate with relevant colleagues, support services and agencies (e.g.
HUBX, The Library, police, health service, Students representatives, student societies).
Ensure student representatives have been selected for their role, trained and supported within their role and ensure any issues are responded to appropriately.
Respond to student queries relevant to the programme where these have not been satisfactorily resolved elsewhere and ensure the general orientation of students through the programmes.
Monitor student participation, working with relevant colleagues as appropriate.
Ensure that the requirements of students with Student Support Plans are met.
Ensure attendance on all modules is monitored and affectively managed.
Contribute to the staff-student voice committee and report on key issues to relevant colleagues.
Quality Assurance The post holder will Produce the Annual Programme Monitoring and Enhancement report in conjunction with the programme team.
Lead Periodic Programme Review and Re-approval in line with College or University partner procedure.
Receive comments from external examiners and ensure that recommendations are implemented where appropriate.
Monitor student progress, achievement and retention.
Monitor suitability and availability of learning resources including library resources.
Monitor the currency and relevance of the programme curriculum.
Scholarship The post holder will Engage in scholarship as required to support teaching activities and continually update knowledge.
Extend, transform and apply knowledge applied from scholarship to teaching and appropriate external activities including knowledge generation, knowledge exchange and knowledge transfer activities.
Develop ideas and find ways of disseminating and applying the result of scholarship.
Person Specification EXPERIENCE & PERSONAL QUALITIES Essential: Experience in academic programmes' management.
Experience of teaching, curriculum development and quality management and enhancement in an HE environment.
Evidence of excellent teaching identified by peer review.
Evidence of a positive impact at discipline programme level beyond own teaching.
Understand equal opportunity issues as they may impact on academic content and issues relating to student need.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills Able to communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a range of groups.
Able to demonstrate independent and self-managing working styles.
Able to undertake duties at different premises including any campus within London as required.
Expected to work outside of normal office hours as required.
Expected to engage in activities associated with promotion, marketing and public outreach of the subject area.
Desirable: Relevant industrial experience.
Experience of research and enterprise activity.
Evidence of high-quality publications or other outputs in research or practice.
Demonstrable ability to lead research projects, win bids and generate income.
Able to participate in and develop external networks.
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS Essential: Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop teaching programmes and the provision of learning support.
In-depth understanding of own specialism to enable the development of new knowledge and understanding within the field.
Competent in technologies and software programmes/packages that are relevant to the subject area including various VLE Platforms.
Excellent general IT skills including MS Office and its applications.
Desirable: Knowledge of higher education and ability to use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students.
EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Essential: Master's degree in relevant subject discipline Fellowship of the Advanced Higher Education (HEA) or willingness to work towards (within 12 months) Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop teaching programmes and the provision of learning support.
Experience of teaching, curriculum development and quality management and enhancement in an HE environment and respective learning environments.
Appropriate digital skills in learning, teaching and assessment Desirable: PhD (or submitted and awaiting examination) or equivalence accepted in a relevant subject area, for example by publication or through appropriate professional achievement or willingness to work towards within an agreed timeframe Alternatively, ability to demonstrate equivalent core knowledge and expertise gained from leading edge practice will be considered in some circumstances.
