The Role ESOL Tutor We are excited to be recruiting the very first Tutors for HMP Millsike, a brand-new prison estate near York.
This is a unique and fantastic opportunity to be among the first to step into the classrooms in Spring 2025, helping to shape and deliver education from the very start.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Prison ESOL Tutor to deliver Gateway Qualifications in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), covering Reading, Writing, and Speaking & Listening units from Entry 1 to Entry 2, to a class size of 12.
You will play a key role in, creating an inclusive learning environment that respects and supports the diverse cultural backgrounds of learners.
You will be supporting prisoners whose first language is not English, helping them to improve their language skills for both personal development and employability.
Youll also have the opportunity to integrate digital resources to enhance learner engagement and develop digital literacy.
You should have a recognised ESOL teaching qualification such as CELTA, TESOL or equivalent and have a passion for making a difference.
Your experience and expertise will be crucial to help continuously improve the development of the learners.
Purpose of the role As an ESOL Teacher, you will play a crucial role in identifying the training requirements of the learners and leading them through their learning journey.
As a Tutor at HMP Millsike you play a significant part in helping to reduce re-offending through education.
This is a challenging yet rewarding role for somebody who is passionate about making a difference.
Key Responsibilities You will assess individual needs, create tailored learning plans, and deliver engaging lessons that reflect the real-world communication needs of learners, enabling them to gain confidence in everyday situations.
Work closely with learners to identify their starting points, you will continually monitor progress, adapting teaching methods as necessary to meet diverse learning needs.
Promote reading for pleasure and restorative practices as key elements in fostering literacy and personal growth Provide 1-2-1 support and guidance to each individual which will help the learner achieve their goals.
Support learners with their personal development which will help link to their long-term employment goals.
Key Requirements A recognised ESOL teaching qualification such as CELTA, TESOL, or equivalent Full teaching qualification at Level 5 or above or equivalent (e.g.
PGCE, Cert Ed, DTTLS) or willingness to work towards.
Confidence in using a diverse range of presentation, facilitation and communication skills.
Experience in creating an effective training programme so that the learners are engaged and motivated in their self-development.
Ability to create a comfortable learning environment for the learners to ensure an enjoyable experience.
The ability to handle challenging situations whilst remaining calm and in control especially in a group situation.
