Due to significant growth across the group, OCU are in a position to build on their already established design team.
They are seeking an experienced Principal electrical Engineer to support their business activities, to ensure the successful and timely delivery of ongoing construction projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for producing and managing designs across a whole range of electrical infrastructure and connection projects in both the distribution and transmission sectors, as well solar and battery storage construction.
To support the significant development of our business, we invite suitably qualified applicants who can demonstrate a sound working knowledge of the electricity supply industry and may also be experienced in the operational and safe delivery of medium to large scale electrical infrastructure projects.
The candidate should have a good understanding of power systems including switchgear, power transformers, voltage control, protection, SCADA, cables systems and overhead lines, as well as substation build activities.
Whilst the position is initially based at our Borehamwood head office, in South Herts, the successful candidate will also be expected to travel frequently to other regional offices and project sites throughout the UK.
A valid driving licence is therefore essential.
They would also be expected to provide technical and commercial support to colleagues in the preparation of tender bids.
Although this is primarily an engineering design position, we would anticipate that suitable candidates should also have an enthusiastic and practical approach to electrical engineering activities and possess some knowledge of commercial and financial matters.
He/she should be self-motivated and will be expected to work as part of the company's head office engineering team or independently, as may be required.
Responsibilities Possess a strong knowledge within the contestable connections side of the market and should be able to demonstrate a proven track record working within projects such as substation construction, cabling, overhead lines, while being fully conversant with working on switchgear, protection, control and major designs of electrical plant.
Good knowledge of power systems, renewable energy and protection design at all voltages.
Sound understanding of electricity industry & regulatory standards, policies, and their application to the role.
Be able to assist with tendering activities and providing technical guidance for any proposed schemes.
Ability to take a brief scope of works and assist in producing a detailed design based on relevant standards.
Be able to prepare site layouts for multi staged substations construction projects.
Manage external civil design contractors and oversee designs to ensure compatibility with the electrical requirements.
Liaise with internal and external design team, clients, manufacturers, and consultancies to produce accurate designs within timescales indicated and in line with deliverables.
Produce detailed electrical control and protection drawings for construction of large protection schemes.
Production of general arrangements, material lists and wiring diagrams for control and protection panels.
Preparation of functional specifications and providing advice on procurement of plant and equipment, and liaising with manufacturers to order plants as per client specification.
Be able to produce detailed specifications for high voltage plant, equipment and ancillary plant and equipment associated with high voltage substations.
Review equipment manufacturers' proposals and liaise with equipment manufacturers to ensure equipment suitability is in line with the proposed design.
Production of equipment schedules in line with relevant IEC, DNO, ENA, IDNO and client based specifications.
Development and review of single line diagrams, P&C block diagrams, & connection diagrams.
Production of AC and DC schematic drawings, control and protection, cable block diagrams, SCADA and multicore cable and termination schedules Skills & Experience Be educated to degree level, or HND qualification or similar in Electrical Engineering Hold a valid UK driving license.
