Role overview Principal Medical Writers play a key role within the scientific team at RiSE Scientific, working closely with the managing partners to oversee one or more client accounts.
They take overall responsibility for the quality and scientific integrity of all outputs delivered by the team, both through writing content to the highest standards and through managing the work of junior writers and freelancers.
They also have responsibility for the professional development for junior writers in their team.
Principal Medical Writers develop close working relationships with clients and healthcare professionals and demonstrate competencies in scientific strategic counsel.
They are passionate about ensuring that all their work is scientifically sound, strategically aligned, and tailored to meet the needs of clients, healthcare professionals, patients, and other stakeholders in the healthcare industry.
This is a remote working role.
Co-working days with the senior team in London will be available based on the candidate's location and needs.
Roles and responsibilities Develop and manage the delivery of a range of educational and promotional materials of the highest standards of accuracy and quality for different clients and stakeholders Review the work of other writers for scientific accuracy and strategic alignment with project objectives and overall client strategy Proof and edit own work and that of other writers according to client style and specifications Form close working relationships with clients and KOLs Act as the key scientific client contact for an account Participate in, and lead, client meetings and calls Represent the agency at client meetings alone as part of a team Act as the overall scientific on-site lead or deliver small meetings alone Attend client meetings with the wider team Generate briefs for other writers and liaise with external suppliers Communicate effectively with team on the development of projects, including timelines and project status Contribute to internal team meetings and brainstorming sessions Oversee multiple large-scale projects across various therapeutic areas simultaneously Input into the development of budgets and timelines Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of therapy areas relevant to own accounts, including product data, terminology, and competitor awareness Provide strategic input on medical communication plans and content development strategies Ensure all content is compliant and adheres to the good publication practice (GPP), the ABPI code of conduct, and others as appropriate Play a key role in new business development by providing scientific expertise, creative ideas and strategic vision during the development of proposals, and by leading pitch presentations from the scientific point of view Proactively contribute to the organic growth of accounts and business performance Generate innovation in medical communication approaches and methodologies Collaborate with executive leadership to shape the strategic direction of the medical writing department Develop and implement best practices that elevate the quality and efficiency of the writing team Follow internal management and standard operating procedures Manage junior team members Maintain up-to-date knowledge and capability in all main software packages including Microsoft office Able to travel occasionally (including internationally) Required skills and attributes Degree in a biomedical science, pharmacy, or medicine.
Advanced degree or PhD preferred 5–8 years' experience in a medical education and communications agency environment, or in a pharmaceutical company Excellent scientific writing and ability to adapt style and content for different target audiences Passion for scientific storytelling Ability to prioritise and balance multiple priorities and demands Flexibility, adaptability and resourcefulness Ability to think beyond the brief Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Enjoys working on creative programmes Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision Attention to detail (style/consistency, grammar, syntax, scientific accuracy, proof-reading, layout and design) High-level IT skills (including Microsoft Office) Desired skills and attributes Thorough understanding of healthcare compliance laws and guidelines for the UK, EU and USA Experience developing eLearning content High-level PowerPoint design skills Experience managing other writers Experience of new business/pitches Experience with EndNote At RiSE Scientific we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation.
