About the role Base Location: Flexible UK | We're proud to offer a Flexible First approach to work, and this role is no exception.
We will, however need your base "office" location to be one of our SSEN offices or depots around Scotland.
Office Locations: Aberdeen, Glasgow, Inverness, Perth Salary: £55,200 - £83,000 + car /car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.
Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available The Policy and Standards Team are part of the Asset Management and Operations Directorate and are the Design and Technical Engineering Governance function for the Transmission Business.
Their purpose is to ensure that suitable policy and standards are in place for all Transmission projects and business areas and they also ensure that the design of the network and the equipment used ensures we operate safely, reliably and in compliance with the relevant legislation.
As the Principal Engineer - FACTS/HVDC, you will; - Write, maintain and own technical specifications and guidance notes required for all for all FACTS (STATCOM, SVC, SSSC, UPFC) and HVDC used on the Transmission network and review existing specifications and update them based on lessons learnt from projects and to include development of technology.
- As part of the Technical Authority, review test plans and witness tests to ensure that all FACTS and HVDC technology and equipment selected is adequately tested, proven, validated and review proposed suppliers to confirm their suitability to be approved for use on the transmission network.
- Provide Subject Matter Expert input to design reviews carried out by the Design Authority and provide specialist input where required and verify project proposals are fit for purpose and identify any scope changes required.
- Provide technical guidance and advice to the transmission business for new FACTS devices and HVDC systems, refurbishment or fault investigations of failed plant.
- Represent SSEN Transmission at industry body events such as ENA, IEC or CIGRE working groups and attend conferences.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have: - A degree in Electrical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline and Chartered Engineer status with a relevant institution or working towards chartered status.
- Demonstrable experience on an expert level in the design, specification, construction, control & operation and maintenance of FACTS devices and HVDC systems at transmission voltages.
- The ability and experience to technically assess issues and/or problems and critically assess a range of technical solutions and an in depth understanding of the technical requirements for design, planning, control, operation and development of FACTS devices and HVDC systems.
- A detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of National Grid, British and European Standards, UK grid code and SQSS alongside the capability and experience in writing technical specifications, guidance notes and work instructions for all FACTS/HVDC aspects.
