About FCSA Freelancer and Contractor Services Association Ltd (FCSA) is the leading UK membership body for service providers and especially accountancy specialists and payment intermediaries in the contingent labour market, committed to furthering the recognition of our members as the industry leaders and protecting the rights and interests of freelancers and contractors.
Our mission is to ensure our members are recognised for their driving transparency, and ethical practices within the sector, and their compliance with tax and employment regulations.
Our work ensures that members operate to the highest standards, and we collaborate closely on policy with multiple government departments and with regulatory bodies, including HMRC, to shape policies that secure fair treatment for workers and a level playing field for compliant businesses.
Role Overview The Non-Executive Chair of the Freelancer and Contractor Services Association (FCSA) will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction and governance of the association.
This individual will serve as an independent leader, providing insight, oversight, and guidance to ensure the association achieves its mission of representing and promoting professional compliance within the freelance and contractor sectors.
The Non-Executive Chair will lead the Board and work closely with the CEO and executive team, ensuring that FCSA meets its objectives, adheres to the highest standards of governance, and remains a respected voice within the industry.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership  Lead the Board in setting and achieving strategic goals that support the growth and integrity of the FCSA and the freelance/contractor sector.
Facilitate board discussions to shape the long-term vision and objectives of the association, while ensuring alignment with FCSA's core values and mission.
Promote FCSA's Codes of Compliance as a benchmark of best practice for the industry.
Governance and Oversight Uphold best practices in governance, ensuring transparency, accountability, and ethical practices are at the forefront of FCSA's operations.
Work with the Board to regularly evaluate organisational policies, ensuring they remain relevant and effective in a changing regulatory environment.
Stakeholder Engagement  Act as an occasional representative and ambassador for FCSA, promoting its vision and advocating for the interests of members within the freelancer and contractor sectors.
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and especially FCSA members.
Board and Committee Management  Chair Board meetings, encouraging open and productive discussions and fostering a collaborative environment.
Ensure that Board members are fully informed of issues, challenges, and opportunities within the industry, providing clarity and guidance as required.
Oversee the performance and development of the Board, ensuring the right mix of skills and experience are present to support the organisation's mission.
Support for the CEO  Act as a mentor and advisor to the CEO, providing counsel and feedback on strategic decisions and operational matters.
Regularly review the CEO's performance, setting measurable objectives and providing constructive feedback to support their development.
Facilitate effective communication between the Board and the executive team to align operational activities with strategic goals.
Essential Skills and Experience Proven leadership experience at the Board level, preferably within a trade association, professional body, or regulated industry.
Strong understanding of compliance, governance, and regulatory standards affecting the freelancer and contractor sectors in the UK.
A track record of building relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, regulatory bodies, and industry representatives.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage, inspire, and influence a variety of audiences.
Strategic thinking and sound judgment, with the ability to balance long-term objectives with operational realities.
Independence, impartiality, and a commitment to ethical governance.
Commitment and Terms The role is a part-time, non-executive position, requiring a time commitment of approximately 1-2 days per month, which will include attendance at board meetings, industry events, and strategic planning sessions.
The Non-Executive Chair will be expected to serve a three-year term, subject to annual performance reviews and reappointment at the Board's discretion The role is remunerated at a rate of between £12,000 and £15,000 per annum fixed fee, payable monthly The Non-Executive Chair will be instrumental in upholding FCSA's commitment to professional standards and ethical practices, ensuring that the association continues to represent the interests of its members while promoting compliance, credibility, and growth within the freelance and contractor sectors.
