Job summary This exciting new role will play a pivotal role in delivering Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust's (SCFT) multi award winning sustainability programme, Care Without Carbon (CWC).
The CWC team undertakes the delivery of this programme of work not only at SCFT, but also at and in conjunction with other NHS peers and so this role will also make up an essential part of the consultancy work that we undertake toward delivering change across the Sussex region and further afield.The post holder will be the subject matter expert, and activity co-ordinator, within the team on all matters pertaining to data, reporting and analysis in all areas of the CWC Programme.
This role will support the immediate team, the Trust, and its partners by using expertise in sustainability data to develop reporting tools and metrics to aid informed and timely decision making to meet Net Zero Carbon commitments.Our carbon footprint is what our net zero carbon ambitions will ultimately be measured against.
The post holder will be responsible for maintaining carbon footprints at SCFT and for our partner organisations, working with the various subject matter experts for each emissions source to ensure we are reporting in line with national and international best practice guidelines on carbon accounting.
As part of this, the post holder will work to develop and maintain up to date carbon emissions trajectory pathways that demonstrate how we will achieve net zero carbon in line with agreed targets.
Main duties of the job Be the Team lead and subject specialist for all aspects of data management and reporting systems.
Maintain log of all Team data and reporting outputs to ensure deadlines are kept.
Assist in reviewing these outputs' methods, processes, accuracy, presentation and relevance to operational needs or Sustainability Program delivery.
Develop and lead an ongoing programme of improvement and innovation for the Team's reporting, linked explicitly to Sustainability Program activity, ensuring we remain at the cutting edge of sustainability reporting.
Develop new methodologies, tools, metrics etc.
to meet identified reporting needs, in collaboration with the Team and wider stakeholders and partners, integrating all these as appropriate.
Prepare Sustainability Programme performance reports and other data outputs.
Be the Team subject specialist for carbon inventory standards and undertake training to maintain this.
Manage the upkeep of carbon inventories and develop and monitor net zero carbon trajectory pathways to allow net zero carbon to be achieved on time.
Take a lead/participate in specific Green Plan projects and programmes as required.

The nature of this role is such that it will involve working equally closely with all members of the Team, and its wider clients and partners, as part of being both the subject matter expert in all areas of data analysis but also in the role of having overall oversight of all data management and reporting activities and outputs of the Team.
From time to time, or more generally as appropriate, the post holder may be expected to develop and provide direct line management to more junior members of staff.
To fulfil this role the post holder will need to develop effective working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including (but not limited to) the following.
SCFT Sustainability and Environment Team Specialists at SCFT and partner organisations, travel, waste, anaesthetic gases, pharmacy etc.
Directors of Estates & Facilities at SCFT and partner organisations Executive Board at SCFT and partner organisations Senior service managers at SCFT and partner organisations Finance, governance and performance staff at SCFT and other partner organisations NHS England at national and regional level, as well as Greener NHS NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board Sustainability specialists at other NHS trusts within the southeast and nationally Government departments and agencies NHS Property Services Staff at all levels ( when delivering training and engagement activities) at SCFT and partner organisations The post holder will need to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and confidence in presenting, in a range of formats, complex and often contentious data and information to a range of different audiences from directors and senior manages to frontline staff, as well as large groups of both technical and non-technical staff who have varying data analysis and reporting subject-matter understanding.
They will therefore need to be able to constructively take feedback from all appropriate audiences and work with the Team and wider colleagues to incorporate this feedback and ensure all reporting and data outputs are accurate, relevant and fit for purpose.
They will work closely with staff in a wide variety of areas, seniorities and specialisms to understand and develop a very wide range of data management and reporting outputs.
This will require not only the post holder's subject matter specialism in data analysis and reporting, but will require them being able to learn from, and understand, these colleagues area of specialism and be able to translate this information into appropriate outputs to support programme delivery at SCFT and partner organisations.
They will also be expected to present case studies on the CWC programme at regional, national and international conferences, representing SCFT and other partners.
Key Responsibilities Subject Matter Expert - To act as the primary data, reporting and analytical specialist within the Team; providing expert advice on data definitions, business intelligence, statistics, information analysis and interpretation relating to carbon footprinting, net zero carbon and wider sustainability and environmental metrics.
Managing Data - Manage the maintenance, development and improvement of all data systems and structures that sit within the Team to ensure that they are organised and used in the most efficient way to maximise their value.
Develop and maintain processes to assist with this.
This will include data at Team, Trust, ICS level and beyond.
Analysing Data Acting as the lead data analysis expert in the Team, which includes supporting Team subject matter experts in developing and improving their own analysis and reporting outputs.
Additionally, be responsible for this in three key areas in particular, as set out below.
Undertaking analysis of Sustainability Programme performance at a high and strategic level, particularly with regards to understanding trends in carbon emissions over time and identifying areas of risk with regards meeting net zero carbon targets, and those along the way.
Identifying trends in specific areas of Sustainability Programme activity, notify and work with the relevant subject matter experts in the Team to help them further identify and understand drivers of these observed trends.
Where subject matter expertise does not sit within the Team in certain areas of Sustainability Programme activity then develop knowledge and understanding of data in these areas and be the lead analysist within the Team for them.
Managing Reporting - Oversee and co-ordinate all data, information and reporting outputs (internal and external) from the Team for both SCFT and partner trusts.
This will ensure that deadlines, including legal and statutory, are met in the most efficient way and that the right information is available at the right time for decision making.
This includes being the assigned Team member for liaising with NHS England/Greener NHS and other relevant stakeholders when appropriate in all matters pertaining to this.
Managing and Developing Sustainability Programme Business Intelligence Architecture - Bring together varied data sets in multiple areas of sustainability reporting into valuable, well-structured, SMART outputs and reports.
Moreover, through identifying areas of weakness in availability, delivery and quality of information, recognise, discuss and assist in the resolution of any risks to performance, or more general, reporting.
Developing and Maintaining Net Zero Carbon Trajectories and Roadmaps - Work with Team specialists ( circular economy, energy management), and wider trust(s), to develop and maintain up to date carbon emissions trajectory pathways that demonstrate how we will achieve net zero carbon in line with agreed targets.
Support with Targets and Performance - Work collaboratively with all members of the Team to set and improve Green Plan targets and, specifically, be the subject matter expert on developing new metrics and indicators to monitor performance.
This would involve working with operational (clinical and non-clinical) service leads and other stakeholders to create and test indicators.
Liaising with Performance Team Act as key link for the Team into the Performance Team, identifying new ways of working together, feeding back into them around strategic themes and issues, and bringing learning from the Performance Team back into the Sustainability and Environment Teams work.
Support the Team with Data - Assist all parts of the Team with data management systems, structures and processes within their own areas of expertise and responsibility, including how these link into Team-level datasets, by suggesting improvements to improve efficiency.
Support the Team with Reporting - Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Team to assist building the most appropriate reporting outputs that convey complex information in the best way and in a user friendly and understandable manner to a variety of audiences of different levels of understanding.
Be An Expert Data User - Contribute expertise and knowledge as an expert end user and help managers, stakeholders and key decision makers to communicate, understand and interpret data.
Share skills and raise awareness of how performance information can be used in decision making.
Maintaining Subject Matter Expertise - Sustain up-to-date knowledge and understanding with regards changes in data management and analysis more generally, but also specifically carbon, net zero carbon and wider sustainability data, analysis and reporting methods and standards at a global, national or more local level, as appropriate.
More specifically, be the subject matter expert within the Team for all matters relating to sustainability and carbon inventory accounting and all applicable requirements and standards.
Teaching Others - Devise training materials, presentations and practical exercises to support workshops and training events aimed at enabling non-specialists to communicate complex data sets and make good use of performance reports.
Deliver workshops and training events by giving presentations, facilitating practical exercises and responding to questions raised by participants.
Partner Working Working in a multi-specialist Team that not only delivers just at SCFT but who work with multiple local and national partners (including the regional Integrated Care Board and other NHS providers) and clients means being responsible for all the above at not only SCFT but also supporting these partners in clients in all of these areas as well.
Finance Contribute to the development of departmental budgets associated with our consulting work, be responsible for purchasing of goods and, especially, services (in the form of relevant software, external specialised audit for example) that may be associated with this or work set out elsewhere in this document and monitor track delivery of this work against spend.

Experience Essential Minimum of three years' experience working in a management information environment, analysing complex data using a variety of sources/information systems and monitoring performance.
Experience of managing data hierarchies in a way that maximises their value to users, and in the production of policies, processes and procedures for this.
Minimum of two years' experience in using varied and complex data sets to produce clear and concise reporting outputs in a variety of formats, and to audiences of varied technical skill.
Experience in developing, and then reporting on, business intelligence metrics, targets and other performance indicators to support a diverse programme of work.
Experience of working to tight deadlines and sometimes unpredictable workload patterns.
Desirable Experience of undertaking carbon inventorying ("footprinting") in a large and complex organisation.
