Job summary The Named Midwife for Safeguarding for UHBW, in conjunction with the trust's safeguarding leadership team and named professional roles, will deliver a high quality; evidenced based safeguarding service that provides training, supervision and expert advice on safeguarding for the Trust.
They will work collaboratively within the local Integrated Care System across agencies both within and outside the health community.
The post holder will take the lead in developing, promoting and maintaining high professional standards in safeguarding practice in maternity services and across the trust for the unborn, children and adults, ensuring the Trust meets its statutory and regulatory responsibilities for safeguarding.
Working with maternity leadership roles they will be responsible for facilitating and assuring safeguarding training and supervision of midwives.
They will provide safeguarding advice and expertise to fellow professionals, and work with a range of statutory and non-statutory agencies to assist in providing a multi-agency approach to safeguarding.
Main duties of the job o Effective, highly visible leadership fulfilling the statutory role and responsibilities of the Named Midwife as referenced in Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023) and the Intercollegiate Document 2019 (updated 2022) o Provide expert advice, support and guidance to midwives and wider divisional staff that addresses highly complex, contentious, sensitive and high-risk safeguarding concerns including families where the unborn/newborn is under Sections 17, 47 of the Children Act or in court proceedings o Be an expert support to staff across the trust attending strategy discussions, ICPC / RCPC, core groups or professionals' meetings where safeguarding risks to unborn/newborn and siblings is discussed o Be able to practice confidently in advising on Mental Capacity Act 2005 provisions for 16- and 17-year-olds and adults and Care Act 2014 for adults with care and support needs where there are concerns for the unborn/newborn and or siblings o Be responsible for identifying emerging areas of risk, patterns of concern or themes in practice and sharing these with the safeguarding and divisional leadership team, using expertise to co-develop the responses and mitigations needed o Have responsibility to develop, provide and evaluate safeguarding training for Maternity staff that responds to learning and best practice (Cont'd under detailed job description and main responsibilities) About us University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country, bringing together a combined workforce of over 13,000 staff and over 100 different clinical services across 10 different sites, serving a core population of more than 500,000 people across South West England.

Participate as part of the safeguarding service in providing regular training for trust wide staff including at induction and mandatory updates Provide and oversee regular caseload safeguarding supervision for maternity staff As required provide supervision for complex cases involving an unborn/newborn in a family attending other services in the trust, including to UHBW safeguarding practitioners, clinical matrons, AHP leads and doctors For a more detailed job description, main responsibilities, and person specification, please refer to the job description document attached to this vacancy.
Person Specification Knowledge and Experience Essential Has a minimum of 2 years in a safeguarding role giving advice and support to midwives Experience and knowledge of managing complex safeguarding concerns Experience of delivering training Experience of assessment of risk and information sharing for safeguarding Experience working within safeguarding legislative frameworks for children Experience of receiving safeguarding supervision Excellent knowledge of contemporary safeguarding issues for adults and children Desirable Experience of providing safeguarding supervision Experience of providing line management Experience of/ participation in, statutory review processes.
For example, Rapid Reviews and Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews Qualifications and Training Essential Registered with the NMC as a Midwife Evidence of post registration safeguarding learning at level 3 Evidence of professional development, meeting registration requirements Desirable Supervision and/or training qualification Post registration education to master's level / or working towards, or equivalent learning in safeguarding Skills and Abilities Essential Ability to support staff to develop skills and knowledge in safeguarding Ability to analyze patient information and recognize risks to unborn/newborn and/or siblings Ability to recognise and define risks effecting the welfare of the unborn/newborn, pregnant person Ability to build professional relationships with multiagency colleagues Ability to remain calm under pressure and maintain a positive and caring approach Excellent presentation skills - verbal and written.
Advanced keyboard skills Ability to adapt style and approach to a range of learning needs Excellent interpersonal and communication skills at all levels Ability to work for and as part of a team Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative Aptitudes Essential Able to concentrate for intense periods of work Able to manage an unpredictable workload, reprioritizing items in response to escalation Recognises the emotional impact of safeguarding on self and colleagues and responds with empathy and compassion Understanding of diverse backgrounds and perspectives Understanding of diversity and inclusion in the workplace
