Role: Marine Equipment Fire Protection – Technical Assessor Contract Position Location: Remote, covering the UK We are seeking a Technical Assessor with a background in marine equipment fire protection to play a pivotal role in assessing the accreditation of customers operating in the marine sector.
As a key member of our external assessment team, you will be integral to the UKAS assessment process, providing essential expertise for rigorous and robust evaluations.
Essential Knowledge and Expertise: Extensive theoretical knowledge of key regulations, including: Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Regulation 2016 (MSMER) (as amended) International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS 1974), High-Speed Craft Codes (1994/2000), and the International Code for Fire Safety Systems – Type Approval requirements International Maritime Organisation guidelines, resolutions, and MARED Approved Recommendations Practical, technically focused knowledge of fire protection equipment in the marine environment Familiarity with the new legislative framework and UK conformity assessment system (post-Brexit), including the application of GEN 5 and EA2/17 system +1 criteria Quality assurance procedures for QA modules Strong understanding of product industry practices, including manufacturing processes and techniques Technical Expertise: Proven experience in the direct manufacturing of active fire system components Knowledge of device classification and electromagnetic compatibility requirements for ship installations, including fixed fire detection and alarm systems for control stations, service spaces, accommodation, cabin balconies, machinery spaces, and unattended machinery spaces Proficiency in fire suppression system design and certification, covering components and criteria as specified by SOLAS, IMO Resolutions, International Bulk Chemical Code, and standards such as ISO15371, EN15182 (parts 1-3), EN671-1, EN13565-1, EN694, and the FSS Code as amended Specific Equipment and Systems Knowledge: Expertise in suppression systems, including: Sprinkler systems (water), inert gas, aerosols, high/low expansion systems (air/foam), dry chemical powder Applications for various ship environments, including accommodation, machinery (cat A), cargo spaces, cargo pump rooms, decks, cabin balconies, galleys, and helidecks Familiarity with system components and associated equipment, such as: Nozzles, heads, fire hoses, water mist, deep fat fire nozzles, semi-rigid hoses for fixed systems, reel types, lay-flat hose systems, fixed deck foam systems for tankers, and mobile water monitors (weather decks) Qualifications: Degree in a mechanical engineering discipline Training and Development: Comprehensive training will be provided to support your transition to an Assessor role, including report writing to UKAS standards, ISO/IEC 17065 standard awareness, and UKAS systems training.
