Job summary To assist with the provision of an efficient and cost-effective maintenance and repair service to all properties owned or leased by the Trust.To undertake such tasks outside of core skills (within the competence of the post holder) to meet service needs as required.To assist other trades and contractors, in accordance with service need.To ensure that work is undertaken at all times in accordance with health and Safety requirements to ensure the environment remains safe for patients, staff, contractors and visitors to the Trust.To show commitment to and participate in quality improvement activities.To promote at all times a positive image of people with mental health conditions and/or learning disabilities.To promote at all times a positive image of the Estates Department and the wider Trust.
Main duties of the job The Estates Department is responsible for the repair, maintenance and management of all Building Services within the Trust.An opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic, self-motivated Maintenance Assistants (Engineering) with a background preferably gained in a building services environment.The successful candidate will assist the estates team in providing a comprehensive engineering maintenance service to include all aspects of planned and routine maintenance, installation and repair/replacement work on a wide range of building structures.
The successful candidates will ideally have previous experience in and understanding of plumbing, mechanical or electrical disciplines in a building services environment.The successful candidate will be expected to work under the Trust values and behaviours at all times and will need to be flexible and have the ability to work independently as well as part of a wider team with good organisational skills to be able to prioritise competing demands.Although primarily based at Lanchester Road Hospital, Durham, you may be required to work from other Trust sites for periods of time as the service dictates.

Carries out maintenance activities both above and below ground, at heights and in confined spaces.
Works outdoors and indoors in office and clinical environments.
Moves heavy materials, equipment and manhole covers.
Works on occasions with materials contaminated with process effluents and sewage.
Ensures that work is undertaken at all times in accordance with Health and Safety requirements, maintaining a safe environment for self, colleagues, patients, staff, contractors and visitors to the sible for ensuring all equipment (.
power tools, workshop machinery) is used safely and effectively by self and others, following manufacturers instructions, immediately reporting any defects in accordance with local procedures.
May be required to undertake other semi-skilled work or to assist with tasks outside core skills but within established competence, to meet service need.
Person Specification Qualifications Essential A good standard of general education Basic maintenance experience and training Desirable A craft certificate or Trade certificate Multi-skilled engineering training.
Experience Essential Broad experience of general engineering maintenance and/or building services.
Experience of assisting tradesmen and carrying out minor maintenance work.
Desirable Experience working in an NHS environment Multi-skilled engineering experience.
Experience in the execution of Planned Preventative Maintenance systems.
Skills Essential Able to demonstrate a range of skills relevant to the post.
Ability to use a full range of hand and power tools.
Capable of receiving and understanding verbal and written instructions Able to problem solve using innovative approaches Able to communicate clearly to a wide range of people Able to manage own time and prioritise effectively.
Able to demonstrate thoroughness and attention to detail.
Able to work in confined spaces
