Job overviewWe are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Upper GI diagnostic team as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. You will be responsible for offering expert clinical advice, emotional support, and managing your own caseload of cancer patients and their pathway of care. You will champion and deliver NHSE Cancer Personalised Care standards and ensure issues associated with patients' experience are visible to the MDT and are a top quality priority for service improvement.
Main duties of the jobFully comply with the trust Cancer CNS Standard Operational Policy and work towards meeting cancer nursing ACCEND framework competency.Assist in the delivery of an expert specialist nursing service for people with suspected cancer and provide specialist nursing advice, clinical assessment, and support to patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis.Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence-based nursing care.Initiate and interpret tests and investigations used in cancer treatments, ongoing monitoring, and late effects care.Demonstrate sound knowledge of cancer and its treatment in relation to people living with and beyond cancer.Manage symptoms for the consequences of cancer and its treatment.Develop practice to deliver nurse-led clinics supporting cancer patients' care and needs.Support the team and organisation in delivering innovative services to support cancer patient access to the team and early diagnoses.Assess and meet patients' ongoing care, health, and wellbeing needs, developing care plans and action referrals as a result.Use data to identify high-risk individuals and groups to ensure that services meet their needs.Support self-care, self-management, and enable independence.Ensure clear documentation in the patient's records of all significant consultations following Best Records Keeping Guidance.Working for our organisationKing's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK's largest and busiest teaching Trusts with a turnover of c£1 billion, 1.5 million patient contacts a year and more than 15,000 staff based across South East London. Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesEducation and ResearchEnsure all patients are fully informed of the risks and benefits of proposed procedures/treatments, contributing to the process of securing informed consent.Produce and provide all patients with relevant and accessible written information regarding their treatment in accordance with Trust standards.Participate in the speciality and trust-wide audits associated with cancer care.Supervise and participate in the delivery of programmes of education and training according to the identified needs of clients, carers, and others involved in their care.Work with other clinical staff to identify knowledge gaps in relation to specialist patients and ensure staff are appropriately educated.Contribute to the development of nursing practice within the team and act as a practice supervisor to Trust and honorary contract employees.Actively participate in education events provided by the Trust and primary care sector.Attend meetings and conferences as appropriate ensuring that you are fully conversant with current issues both within the Trust and within the specialist services locally and nationally.Promote and facilitate evidence-based practice and clinical audit within the Trust, raising the profile and enhancing the contribution of nursing to patient care and informing business and service development plans.Participate in and assist with any appropriate/relevant Trust-approved research projects conducted within the department.Promote nursing research and evidence-based practice relevant to the speciality.ManagementLiaise effectively with all other disciplines within the Trust and at local level.Participate in the management of change to improve standards and communication links from Acute Trusts through to Primary Care.Contribute actively to any relevant initiatives within the care group and provide support to colleagues and Heads of Nursing.Act positively in leadership of nursing within the care group acting as an effective role model.Comply with measures to actively manage and reduce risk to patients. Ensure the formal reporting and recording of adverse incidents in line with Trust policy.Network with the team of Clinical Nurse Specialists within the Trust to evaluate, develop and promote the specialist nursing role.Utilise and maintain information systems to aid audit and provide regular activity analysis reports.Maintain contemporaneous and accurate treatment records, submitting relevant statistics, reports, and activity data as requested.Ensure the best use of available resources within agreed budget to provide a cost-effective service.Forge effective links within primary, secondary, and tertiary care to ensure effective communication.Ensure compliance with the Trust's Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trust's Race Equality Scheme and the Trust's duty to promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people.Comply with measures in the Service Quality Standards and appropriate NICE/IOG guidance, ensuring transparent delivery of service.Participate in the yearly Quality Assessment process, liaising with Trust cancer management team and lead on the implementation of recommendations from review.Personal Professional DevelopmentStrive for own professional development to meet compliance with role descriptions described in the cancer CNSs Framework for the role.Attend monthly clinical supervision to support governance in psychological level two practice.Achieve a range of clinical competencies as required to fulfil the role.Keep up-to-date with current literature and research in the speciality.Maintain personal and professional development in accordance with PREP requirements, attending mandatory study sessions as required.Undergo and actively participate in own performance appraisals.Keep up to date with NMC, relevant specialist Faculty & Trust guidelines and protocols.Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional conduct working within and accepting responsibility for maintaining agreed levels of competence.Work towards a higher degree or equivalent.Person specificationSound knowledge of Cancer Personalised Care and NHS Long-term plan.Experience of data collection for audits, analysing data, and delivering presentations.Extensive clinical experience pertinent to cancer care, oncology, and/or UGI.SkillsNMC Level 1 Registered Nurse.Educated to Degree level or above.Breaking Bad News Training.Understanding of clinical governance and risk assessment.Advanced Communication Skills.Level 2 psychological skills.Employer certification / accreditation badgesYou must have appropriate UK professional registration.
