Job overview This post will provide a comprehensive specialist service to clients with benign breast disease, women undergoing breast screening and patients with breast cancer. They will act as an expert and resource for members of the multi-disciplinary team, providing clinical leadership within this area of care, developing specialist education and supporting research relevant to the speciality. The post holder will act as the key worker and liaise with other healthcare professionals to provide the best possible specialist care for their patients. The post holder will support the nursing lead to develop the breast services, adhering to the NICE guidance and the 10 key roles for Nursing and Midwifery. Main duties of the job Provide and receive sensitive, highly complex or contentious information and barriers to understanding. Facilitate communication, resulting in clear responsibilities being identified within the multi-professional team. Communicate highly sensitive condition related information to patients, relatives providing empathy and reassurance. To co-ordinate the patients' journey, acting as a key worker. Exchange verbal and written information with patients, staff and carers requiring tact and diplomacy. Under the guidance of the leads, assist in the assessment of needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and reflect the Trust's policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Participate in the appraisal process each year with the first appraisal taking place within the first 6 months from appointment. Completed the Principles of Breast Care Practice Course at level 6/7 or a willingness to undertake this course. Minimum of 2 years post registration experience, preferably including 1 year experience of a leadership position. Evidence of study at degree level in Health/Nursing Related Studies or willingness to undertake degree/masters level study. ENB 998/ Mentorship/Assessor module or equivalent or have experience of teaching and assessing. Leadership and management skills. Analytical & Judgemental Skills Responsible for the assessment of needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and reflect the Trust's policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Demonstrate skills for assessing and interpreting specialist acute and other patient conditions, initiating actions as appropriate. Planning & Organisational Skills Prioritise and plan own specialist workload and organise own time according to their delegated job plan. Contribute to the principles of clinical governance ensuring that quality standards are set and monitored. Co-ordinate activities with other professional agencies and support groups. Responsibility for Patient/Client Care Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for nurses, midwives and health visitors and be accountable for own clinical practice and professional actions at all times. Ensure continued and effective registration with the NMC. Assess, develop and implement specialist nursing care programmes, advising patients and relatives on matters relating to their clinical condition. Promote patient health and assist in education strategies for healthy lifestyles and to signpost patients to specialist help. Responsibility for Policy/Service Development Implement policies and procedures, and propose changes to practices for own area. Assist in the delivery of education to support staff in the adoption of new policies and procedures. Responsibility for Human Resources Provide leadership to the clinical team and identify innovation in clinical practice. Provide clinical supervision to other staff and students. Contribute to the training of other staff on the specific clinical condition. Responsibility for Information Resources Maintain adequate and accurate records of all educational sessions and records for personal use. Collect statistical information and reports as requested for the Trust. Update and maintain patient records. Person specification Experience Post Registration years experience 3 years. Experience in clinical nurse specialist role or equivalent senior level cancer related role. Degree Level Study. Good working Knowledge of Breast cancer services and treatment pathways. Qualifications Leadership course or equivalent. Advanced communication course or equivalent.
