Linux Systems and Storage Specialist Role Overview: We are seeking a creative and experienced Linux expert to join our Systems and Networks team within IT Services.
This role focuses on providing and supporting both physical and virtual computing and storage solutions for IT Services and researchers across the division.
Key Responsibilities: Lead the design, build, and management of the Linux and Open Enterprise Server estate.
Develop and manage automation and management tools for Linux servers, including Ansible and Git.
Advise on and implement strategic technical approaches for Linux infrastructure, considering cloud and hybrid cloud solutions.
Network and Infrastructure knowledge to administrate other IT services, including VMware, complex storage systems, LAN/WAN, firewalls, databases, and data centres.
Monitor services and refine the toolchain to enhance the customer experience.
Write and maintain scripts and software for service delivery and automation.
Provide third-line support for complex technical issues.
Strategy and Project Management: Manage IT projects, including budgets, progress reporting, and stakeholder communication.
Analyse and modernize legacy systems, ensuring smooth migration to new solutions.
Contribute to the development of IT Services' strategy and provide expert advice on systems and network refreshes.
Compliance and Security: Conduct audits to ensure compliance with guidelines and external requirements.
Develop and implement IT security systems and policies.
Ensure all work considers Information Governance requirements.
Personal Development and Collaboration: Stay updated on IT advances and provide advice to colleagues and stakeholders.
Participate in training and development opportunities, mentoring other IT staff.
Maintain documentation and represent IT Services at meetings and committees.
Essential Criteria: Equivalent to graduate-level knowledge and analytical skills.
Advanced experience with Linux system administration (SUSE, Ubuntu, CentOS, RedHat).
Expertise in virtual infrastructure and storage management.
Development experience, including Unix shell scripting and Python.
Understanding of IP networking and IT security principles.
Strong problem-solving, time management, and communication skills.
Demonstrated history of self-improvement and learning new technologies.
Desirable Criteria: Experience managing large networks and using Ansible for Linux automation.
Familiarity with project management and cybersecurity standards (Prince2, ITIL, ISO27001, Cyber Essentials Plus).
Positive attitude and excellent customer service skills.
