LAWYER/LEGAL REVIEWER PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS AUTHORITY FOR HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE PACKAGE: £57,666 Are you a qualified barrister, solicitor, chartered legal executive (or equivalent)?
Do you also have experience in providing proportionate evidence-based legal advice and making sound decisions?
We have an exciting opportunity for two Lawyers/Legal Reviewers to join our small and collaborative team on a permanent basis.
The team is responsible for reviewing final fitness to practise panel decisions of the 10 health and social care regulators we oversee, and where we decide that the decisions do not protect the public, we can bring an appeal to Court under Section 29 of the National Health Service Reform and Health Care Professions Act 2002.
This is to the High Court of Justice of England and Wales, the Court of Session of Scotland, or the High Court of Justice of Northern Ireland.

We also share learning and feedback from our scrutiny of panel decisions with the regulators with the aim to help improve regulation and decision making, and these are taken into account by our Performance Review team in their regular assessments of a regulator's performance.

The role You must be either: a barrister, solicitor, chartered legal executive or have the equivalent legal professional status, with an entitlement to practise in England and Wales.
You will have a strong commitment to protecting patients and the public, and share our values of integrity, transparency, respect, fairness and teamwork.

This role needs someone who has skills, experience and judgement to provide well-reasoned, proportionate, and accurate legal advice on whether those panel decisions meet the legal threshold for an appeal under section 29 of the 2002 Act, applying the relevant legal framework, policy and criteria to achieve outcomes that protect the public, uphold professional standards, and maintain public confidence in the professions.

You will carry out a detailed analysis of complex, technical, and often large amounts of information and evidence.
You must demonstrate that you have sound and objective judgment, strong analytical skills and solid writing skills, with an ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to non-legally qualified Decision-Makers, who are determining whether to appeal a case.
You will need to have excellent organisational and time management skills, and the ability to prioritise work and work to deadlines.

Additionally, you will assist the Head of Legal (and any external legal advisers) in the management of cases and potential appeals or judicial review proceedings.
This includes holding and progressing a caseload through our process.
You will manage relationships with external Counsel and solicitors to ensure our appeals work is conducted effectively.

You will also identify ways to improve the quality of decision making, deliver internal training, provide ad hoc legal advice and input into projects as required.
On occasions and where required, you will act as a Decision-Maker on section 29 case meeting panels.
