Key Responsibilities The primary purpose of this role is to:
Maintain CL3 laboratory by overseeing daily upkeep, including cleaning, waste management, equipment checks, and inventory. Provide support to CL1/CL2 labs as needed. Assist scientists by aiding in cell culture and experimental procedures. Coordinate phlebotomy requests by collaborating with biological sample specialists. This role requires the ability to follow outlined procedures/instructions efficiently with a high attention to detail.
Specific Responsibilities: Perform weekly & monthly CL3 maintenance duties including, but not limited to, cleaning equipment, scraping freezers, topping up incubators/water baths & equipment checks. Manage removal of CL3 waste, working with other laboratory technicians to schedule shared use of the autoclave. Proactive management of CL3 lab-specific stock, ensuring backup stock is available. Perform lab-related audits, e.g. human tissue, viruses, etc. Assist CL3 manager with biyearly laboratory shutdown & regular maintenance/checks. Update and maintain freezer maps & inventories. Assist scientists with their cell culture and characterisation, including freezing down cell stocks and isolation of PBMCs from fresh blood. Support scientists with experiments when needed. Coordinate phlebotomy requests including identification of blood donors, scheduling of phlebotomy and adherence to approved protocol. Keep up to date with records & training including Cell Database, electronic lab notebook, HTA & CL3 competency. Undergo additional training to support lab/building when needed, e.g. COSHH. Holiday/absence cover for other technicians when needed. Education, Experience and Knowledge: Essential: Education: A Level in Biology or equivalent. Previous work within a laboratory environment. Demonstrate a commitment to ensuring laboratory equipment is maintained and operated in a safe manner. Demonstrate a desire to provide material and practical support to scientists in a proactive manner. Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to learn new techniques and adopt new practices when needed. Proven ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain accurate records. Ability to work independently & with a team, including strong communication skills and honesty when needing further clarification or support. Good working knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and Outlook. Able to perform basic arithmetic calculations including dilutions. Preferred: Previous work experience within a similar role in Industry, Healthcare or an Academic setting. Previous laboratory experience within protein, microbiology, or cell biological sciences. Knowledge of aseptic technique, e.g. cell culture. Other: This role requires working in an environment where work with HIV & HBV is carried out (containment level 3 (CL3) laboratory). Previous CL3 laboratory experience is not required, and full training will be provided.
