The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of Industrial Placements, which will commence from July 2025 until July 2026.
We're looking for a Technician Engineer Industrial Placement to help us make a difference to our planet.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year in Industry placement, developing your skills and knowledge and ensuring you gain the most value possible from your experience with us.
You will have the opportunity to network with our cohort of Industrial Placements all over the Met Office and understand what career opportunities we can offer you after you graduate.
As our Technician Engineer Industrial Placement, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home.
This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

You'll be working on projects that really matter and will make a difference.
Working within the Systems Engineering Team, based in Exeter, you will support the delivery of engineering tasks to enhance the Met Office's capability and reputation.
You will help to research, develop, build, and set up weather stations and weather monitoring equipment.
Our environmental observations are fundamental to almost all the services the Met Office provides; direct data and products, models, verification of forecasts, and for providing evidence of climate change.
Your key duties Prepare Technical Specifications to plan the work of upgrading infrastructure at an Automatic Weather Station (AWS).
Use experience of scientific instrument interfacing and wiring schedules to produce technical drawings and circuit schematics to describe the building and installation of automatic weather station components.

Whilst this is a temporary position until July 2026, there is potential for it to develop into an opportunity to join our Graduate Development scheme once you have completed your University studies.

Essential Criteria, skills and experience: You are studying for an undergraduate degree with a significant Engineering focus which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e.
sandwich course).
You have good oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey technical information.
You live and breathe it with a flexible approach to meeting work requirements within a set deadline.
You keep evolving - evidence of an interest in current and emerging engineering practice.
Some experience of scientific instrument interfacing and wiring schedules.
You are prepared to work away from home on occasions for up to 3 days, for example on UK field trips staying in overnight accommodation.
