Job summary Critical Care Unit The Critical Care Unit is a 5 bedded acute surgical unit caring for Maxillo-Facial/ENT cancer ,reconstructive surgery and burns patients.
We currently have an opportunity for a Health Care Support Worker to join our busy and friendly specialist ideal candidate will be empathic, caring and will also be reliable, self-motivated and able to work as a member of the team assisting all staff in the daily running of the ward and providing high standards of care to patients.Previous experience in a health care setting is desirable although orientation, training and supervision will be provided to the right candidate.
Basic IT skills are beneficial.

Main duties of the job The Health Care Support Worker will work as part of the critical care team with the supervision of registered practitioners to provide safe and effective patient focused care at all times.Contribute to the development of the care environment with a positive, professional attitude.Contribute to the maintenance of daily provision of service and care to meet the individual needs of patients and the department.To support the smooth running of the ward and ensure patients, relatives and carers are supported in a friendly and efficient manner.You will also ensure that policies and guidelines are adhered to.

Job description Job responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities To prepare bed spaces in preparation for receiving patientsAssist to ensure the ward is restocked and have shared responsibility for maintaining the cleaning of clinical areasTo assist with the admission and discharge of patientsThe post holder will be required to work as part of a skilled team to support the provision of an effective and safe clinical serviceWork as part of a team under supervision to provide a safe, effective environment of care for patients, relatives and their carers.
Under direction of a registered practitioner, to support a comprehensive level of care, maintaining high standards and continuity of care to patientsSupport the registered practitioner in the delivery of direct and indirect patient careUnder the direction of a registered practitioner, undertake a range of delegated clinical duties including record keeping, patient observations and specimen handlingUnder the direction of the registered practitioner check sterilised equipment, ensuring related paperwork is in order and completed correctlyTo assist in ensuring all written documentation is completed, Patient care plans and chartsUse the Patient Centre system for relevant purposesAssist with the provision of the day-to-day management of clinical equipment and report any problems to senior colleagues, completing the necessary documentationCommunicate with colleagues, patients and their relatives/ carers in a professional and compassionate manner.
To escalate any concerns about a patient to the relevant practitioner immediatelyAssist patients with activities of daily living whilst ensuring the privacy and dignity of the patient is maintained at all times, for example, undressing, chaperoning, emotional and physical support, overcoming barriers to communicationEnsure patients, visitors and staff are cared for/ supported sensitively and professionally with due regard to ethnic origin, culture, religion, disability and sexual orientationActing as a positive role model for peers, supporting other Health care support workers as requiredMaintain professionalism at all times and respect colleaguesTo deal with queries and problems from patients and staff, both on the telephone and personally, in a positive and helpful manner and escalate as appropriateAttend department meetingsEnsure a safe environment in the department for patients/ staff and visitors and inform the Ward Manager/ Nurse in Charge of potential hazards.
Comply with COSHH regulations and other Health and Safety legislationAssist in the evaluation of new equipment and resourcesTo undertake phlebotomy tasks as required upon completion of the competencyBe able to use any information technology within the department Person Specification Qualifications Essential A good standard of secondary education Desirable NVQ in healthcare or equivalent Basic IT skills Attributes Essential Demonstrates compassion when dealing with patients, families and colleagues Good communicaton skills Understanding of confidentiality Experience Essential Experience of team working Desirable Experience of caring for and supporting patients in a care/ hospital environment
