Job summary The role of the health navigator will be to work as part of a multi disciplinary team to support vulnerable people through the criminal justice systems.
The navigator role is an essential role working within police custody in the Worthing area and helps with assessment and support for both adults and young people.
The health and justice navigator will work alongside qualified staff in undertaking assessments and liaising with the police and partner aim of the health and justice service is to support vulnerable people who enter into the criminal justice system with the aim of supporting any health needs.
The role can be challenging and very rewarding and it is important that the people who work in such a setting are able to build rapport and undertake assessments of health needs.
A good understanding of mental health will be important and also other health related issues that people may experience.

Job description Job responsibilities The role will entail working as part of a team to support vulnerable people who have been detained in police custody.
This can often be a stressful time for people and a time when support may be needed upon release from custody or when they go through court processes.
The navigator role will be working in a busy police custody setting and working closely with the police and partner agencies.The role will be part of a multi disciplinary approach to supporting vulnerable people and the health and justice navigator is a valuable member of the team.
The role will entail assessing and supporting vulnerable people, taking a person centred approach and thinking about any risks that may arise.The role will support the team around helping to formulate assessments to support the adult and young person.
The navigator role will work closely with qualified staff members and help to triage and screen referrals and work together around the assessment process.
The navigator role takes on the assessments for the adults and young people who present with lower risks.
However, the navigators also support the team discussions around risk management and offer advice and support to qualified staff members.An important part of the role is liaising with partner agencies.
Making referrals to other services, such as mental health services, social services, drug and alcohol services, support groups, community resources, GPs and hospitals.
Person Specification Skills, Knowledge & Abilities Essential Awareness of a range of vulnerabilities.
An awareness of the impact of vulnerabilities on individuals.
Vetting Requirements Essential The post holder will require additional vetting by partner agencies; this includes Police Vetting and / or Prison Clearance.
Qualifications & Training Essential NVQ Level 3 Health & Social Care (or willingness to work towards) or equivalent experience.
Experience Essential Experience of working with a range of vulnerabilities which may include mental health, physical health, learning disabilities, abuse, addiction and social issues.
Desirable Experience and/or sound knowledge of the Criminal Justice System.
Experience of working in a community based setting.
