Alexander Barnes is leading the search for a Head of Compliance & MLRO for a high-growth crypto start-up working on cutting-edge solutions in digital payments and cross-border settlements.
The company is expanding its operations and preparing for regulatory licensing in key jurisdictions.
They are looking for a compliance leader with expertise in AML, regulatory compliance, and policy development across the UK and EU.
What You'll Do: Lead compliance strategy and provide advisory support across the organisation, ensuring alignment with UK and EU regulatory frameworks.
Manage and build compliance policies, procedures, and controls to support the pursuit of key licenses (e.g., API or VASP).
Act as the SMF16 and SMF17 responsible person under FCA rules.
Oversee AML and counter-terrorist financing programs as the MLRO , driving robust financial crime prevention.
Monitor regulatory developments, including MiCA and GDPR, and adapt strategies to meet evolving requirements.
Engage cross-functionally with teams including Data, Engineering, Finance, Legal, and Risk to implement an effective compliance program.
Report to senior management, management committees, and the board on compliance matters.
Oversee regulatory engagement with key authorities in the UK and EU, acting as the primary point of contact.
Collaborate with first-line and other second-line teams to maintain strong control environments that meet regulatory standards.
What You'll Bring: 10+ years of experience in compliance, ideally in financial services, FinTech, or cryptocurrency.
Direct experience in SMF16 and SMF17 roles, with strong knowledge of AML, CTF, and financial crime frameworks.
Proven success in managing compliance programs and obtaining regulatory licenses in the UK and EU.
Deep understanding of relevant regulations, including MiCA, GDPR, and AML/CTF.
Strong leadership skills, with experience managing dispersed teams and working cross-functionally.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
Self-motivated, ethical, and comfortable questioning and challenging the status quo.
Nice to Have: Experience in the cryptocurrency industry or a related field.
Certifications such as CAMS or ICA.
