The role of domestic assistant entails maintaining the overall cleanliness and hygiene standards within our homes.
This includes ensuring that all living spaces, common areas and shared spaces are kept clean, safe and comfortable for both the people we support and staff members.
Its important that our Domestic Assistants have a level of care and understanding for those we support, and are comfortable communicating with everyone who lives, works and visits the home.
All Domestics must have 3-months experience in a similar role.
What are the responsibilities of a Domestic Assistant in a care home?
As a domestic assistant in a care home, youll use your attention to detail to ensure that our home is clean, inviting and welcoming.
Youll carry out daily and weekly cleaning routines including dusting, mopping, polishing and vacuuming.
Itll be your responsibility to ensure that all communal areas such as dining rooms, lounges and toilets are kept to a high standard, and comply with infection control guidelines.
You may also be required to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene standards in our residents rooms, whilst making sure to respect the privacy and individual needs of everyone we support.
Itll be your job to ensure that toiletries, soaps and towels are consistently stocked, and to maintain our inventory of cleaning and hygiene supplies.
What skills and qualifications should a Domestic Assistant have if they want to work in a Care home?
There are a number of skills required to work as a domestic assistant in an Exemplar Health Care home: Attention to detail Its important that a domestic assistant has a great attention to detail.
Being meticulous and thorough in cleaning tasks to ensure that all areas are properly cleaned, sanitised and free from potential hazards is extremely important.
Cleaning techniques A good understanding of proper cleaning techniques, and the different cleaning agents and equipment which youll use is hugely beneficial.
Empathy and compassion Youll regularly be in contact with the people we support, visitors and other members of staff, and so compassion, care and understanding is a key attribute.
Having a compassionate and empathetic approach towards the people we support is particularly important, and helps us to create a supportive and caring environment.
Communication skills Good communication skills come hand-in-hand with empathy and compassion, but its important that you can communicate effectively in order to collaborate with other people in the home.
Youll need to be able to understand instructions clearly, report issues, and maintain a professional and courteous demeanour.
Time management No two days will be the same, so its important that you have the ability to prioritise tasks accordingly, whilst managing your time effectively.
You may be given a number of tasks on any given day, and so its key that you are able to complete your assigned duties comfortably and safely.
Health and safety A knowledge of health and safety regulations is beneficial, as youll need to become familiar with health and safety guidelines and regulations relating to cleaning, infection control, and waste management to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all.
