Job Title: Development Engineer Location: Leeds Employment Type: Full-Time Salary: Competitive package based on experience, including pension Job Summary: A pioneering leader in high-performance devices designed for extreme environments is seeking a Development Engineer.
This company specializes in the design & development of devices that are used in various industries within challenging and environments.
Purpose of the Role: The Development Engineer will be a key contributor to the design and production team, responsible for creating and advancing piezoelectric transducers, sensors, and systems for demanding applications across industries such as aerospace, automotive, nuclear, manufacturing, process control, and oil & gas.
This role requires a collaborative, hands-on approach, working closely with materials, acoustic, and electro-mechanical engineers to meet client requirements and drive prototype development.
Key Responsibilities: Lead and contribute to projects focused on developing sensor and system products across multiple market sectors.
Design technical drawings for mechanical components and assemblies using 2D and 3D design tools.
Assemble, test, and characterize sensor assemblies through a range of acoustic, electrical, and mechanical methods.
Coordinate with suppliers to address product and project requirements.
Support the design and prototyping of novel sensors based on specifications, including the preparation of risk registers, timelines, and bills of materials.
Provide technical guidance to support business development, collaborating with sales and technical teams to achieve commercial objectives.
Present progress and findings from development activities to technical and commercial stakeholders.
Candidate Profile Essential Qualifications and Skills: A degree in Science or Engineering plus a minimum of 2 years of industrial experience, or an HNC/HND with at least 2 years of experience, or at least 3 years in research, design, product development, or manufacturing.
Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), ideally using SolidWorks.
A hands-on, analytical approach to development, with strong documentation and reporting abilities.
Familiarity with modern machining, fabrication, and assembly processes for mechanical and electro-mechanical products.
Competence in reading and creating technical drawings with precise tolerances, limits, and fits.
Understanding of engineering compliance and risk management principles.
Proficiency in written and spoken English for technical documentation and presentations.
Experience working within a quality management system, including documentation control and configuration management.
An entrepreneurial, innovative mindset with the ability to generate new ideas and a proactive, can-do attitude.
Ability to work independently to meet project deadlines within a small, dynamic team.
Desirable Skills and Experience: Knowledge of non-destructive testing (NDT/NDE), particularly ultrasonic testing.
Background in designing, modeling, or constructing ultrasonic or piezoelectric sensors.
Project management experience and a record of successful project delivery.
Familiarity with FEA analysis or simulation tools, such as OnScale or COMSOL.
Experience with electronics, embedded software, or digital signal processing.
Experience in an ISO 9001 accredited environment.
Practical experience with prototype manufacturing, including 3D printing, manual drilling, milling, and soldering.
Familiarity with basic electronic design and assembly.
Experience with designing components for explosive environments (ATEX) or working within an APQP framework.
