Job Introduction As part of the BBC's Local News Partnerships, the Shared Data Unit is recruiting for a data journalist (computer-assisted reporter).
This role sits within an award-winning team of data specialists who deliver investigative content to the BBC and the wider local news industry.
The role involves finding exclusive public interest data journalism stories, which can serve a national audience and scale down regionally to meet the needs of local partners.
It also involves helping deliver the Shared Data Unit's training programme for local news journalists.
Main Responsibilities As a Journalist, you will: Generate original ideas for impactful data-driven investigations that will resonate with regional audiences and the wider BBC Explore and summarize data for interesting news angles using spreadsheet software such as Google Sheets and/or Excel Use off-the-shelf data visualisation tools such as Flourish and Datawrapper to explain complex datasets to our audience.
Help deliver the Shared Data Unit's training workshops for regional journalists, and help organise its programme of events throughout the year such as workshops, hackdays and conferences Monitor data releases from public authorities and other sources for potential sources of news stories.

You will be a talented investigative journalist, brimming with story ideas.
You will be adept at handling datasets with a track record of delivering public interest news stories from a variety of data sources.
You will enjoy working on long-form digital investigations rather than daily news.
You will be passionate about local news and have an understanding of the regional news sector.
You will be passionate about exploring the latest developments in digital storytelling and computer-aided journalism.
Essential: A strong grasp of how to clean and analyse data using spreadsheet software such as Excel and Google Sheets Experience of using visualisation tools such as Datawrapper and Flourish (including spatial data) Experience negotiating with public officials for data and open records, and sound understanding of how to gather information via Freedom of Information requests Experience of writing for the web and using content management systems to make compelling content Thorough understanding of the local news sector, and experience in delivering public interest news to local audiences Desirable: Basic knowledge of programming languages used by data journalists such as Python and R About the BBC We don't focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it.
