Greater Manchester Police currently has vacancies and projected vacancies for custody detention officers, to provide professional management of appropriate detainees and enable positive pathways to partner services out of custody.
Working as part of a team in support of custody sergeants, detention officers carry out a multi-functional role within very busy custody units.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with the management of arrivals and Custody Desk duties, including the booking in of evidence of detainees, in line with procedures outlined in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) and force policy.
Assist in the processing of Voluntary Attendees, in line with force procedures.
To facilitate mandatory drug testing by:-obtaining samples and conducting tests-completing documentation-storing/dispatching samples-liaising with the Evaluation Teams Assist in the preparation, completion and administration of all documentation, information and computer records/systems relating to persons in custody including: -Open, maintain, complete and update custody and detention records and associated documents-searching and updating GMP and national police databases and computer systems-maintaining and updating property records-Maintain filing systems-Complete file and update paperwork for both escort and court services-Use maintain and update Livescan and photocapture equipment -Use maintain and update the Intoxyliser and Libis systems Liaise, as required, with authorised contractors such as solicitors, doctors, Independent Custody Visitors, appropriate adults, interpreters, and relatives of detainees, notify the Custody Officer of all relevant information and ensure that custody records are kept accurate and up to date.
Liaise, with partners to facilitate the transfer of detainees to and from court, other police stations, prisons, immigration etc.
Visit detainees as required by PACE and APP to engage with detainees and ensure that their welfare is being maintained; update custody logs to confirm contact and notify the Custody Officer if there is any change in the condition/ demeanor of a prisoner, particularly with vulnerable or at-risk detainees.
Arrange and accompany visits from healthcare professionals, ensuring all records are completed and the subsequent issue of detainees of any medication prescribed.
GENERAL To promote and comply with GMP's policies on health and safety both in the delivery of services and the treatment of others.
Comply with and promote equality legislation and GMP's policies on diversity and equality.
Take steps to eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.
The post can involve physical restraint and the training will include up to 6 days of Personal Safety Training.
You must be in good health and have a good level of general fitness.
A medical assessment may be required after submission and review of the Pre-employment Medical Questionnaire.
Having a driving licence and access to a car would be an advantage when asked to provide cover at alternative sites however this is not essential.
You must be prepared to attend relevant training courses, including an initial six week training course upon appointment which includes the Officer Safety Training.
You will be contracted to work at a particular Custody site, where it is expected you will be based for the majority of the time.
However, from time-to-time, it may be necessary for you to work at an alternative site temporarily for operational reasons.
Currently the vacancies are based force wide.
You will be required to work a 24/7 rotational shift pattern for which the following allowances are paid:Weekend Enhancement - 14%Shift Allowances - 20% Please note when you are applying for Custody Detention Officer roles, shift allowances and weekend enhancements are not payable for the duration of the initial training period.
